NetBoot and ASD

Hey all,

Is anyone aware of a method to make NetBoot images of ASDs? So I could keep them on the server instead of on several Tech Drives?

Thanks for reading!

Hi

Yes. I've done this for our Service Repair Centres. Currently serving 3S123, 3S132, 3S135, 3S137, 3S138, 3S139. 3S140, 3S141 & 3S142. If you have an external drive with relevant ASDs installed and working on their own partitions simply connect the drive firstly to your 10.6 Server and then to a 10.5 Client with 10.5 SIU installed. Only problem I've seen is Memory Testing can take a long, long, long time. If you disable this and let it do the rest it will be fine.

HTH?

Good to hear you've accomplished it. However, I tried using SIU and it won't show me any of the ASD partitions as selectable source for creating the image. I've tried a (edit) custom (/edit) workflow and used a "variable source", but it doesn't seem to like it.

Can you give me a bit more detail on how you went about creating the NB image?

Appreciate the reply!

Hi

There could be a number of reasons why SIU is not seeing the ASD partitions? You're using the wrong version of SIU. For 10.5 images you use 10.5 SIU - which can't be installed on 10.6. For 10.6 Images you use 10.6 SIU - which can't be installed on 10.5. Another possibility is the ASD partitions have been done wrong.

You don't have to install SIU on OSX Server. OSX Client will do the job just as well. Once created copy the NBIs up to the NetBootSP0 folder.

Hi,

i'm currently working in a repair center (in france, please excuse my english ...), so i tried to install ASD on mac os 10.6 server to boot by netboot from others (macbook, macbook-pro, imac ...) to test them. Put ASD on my netboot server is well done, after when i boot on my client ( with [N])it works perfectly, but how did you do to choose the right ASD fo each client (ASD 138 for MacBook 13-inch Mid 2010, ASD 140 for iMac 21.5 Mid 2010, ...)? How did you do in your case?

thank you in advance ...

Hi,

we already have all the ASD on partitioned usb drive, when i want to run ASD on a mac i'm booting on this drive with [option], choosing the partition corresponding to my model. The problem is that we are several technicien who use these usb drive , so when there is a new ASD release we need to update all the usb drive of all the technician. The idea is to put all the ASD on a netboot server that will be accessible by all of them on a local network. Ideally i'd like to have choice between all ASD after netboot, like with [option] when i switch on mac ... I don't know if it is possible, maybe with a script that would look after the model of the client and boot finally on the corresponding ASD on the netboot server ... If you have an idea i'm listenning, how did you do when you intalled it at the repair center ?

thanks from france.

Hi

It's not something I've bothered to look into and it may be something that might be achieved with a script? Perhaps it's something you could explore? We don't do anything special other than consulting the relevant model's ASD Version in Service Source and selecting it from the list offered by the NetBoot Service. Does not take much effort doing it this way. All the ASD Images are Diskless NetBoot Images configured to serve from more than one NetBoot Server.

I could not get SIU to recognise the efi ASD.

Hi,

thanks for your help, perhaps i'll try to use the restriction of access to NetBoot images by using model filtering, and so target the good ASD for the model of the client connected. I'll see how the client model is identified (it could be good if it is something like "macbook late 2009" but i don't think it is), after i'll list all the model corresponding to each ASD and configure my restrictions ... it's just an idea i'll see tomorow ... I'll let you know if it works.
