Tried to update ipod Touch 4th Generation, Update Failed, iPod won't work

So less than twenty minutes ago I tried to update my iPod touch, knowing it had been asking this for a few days. The update failed, as as of now my iPod Touch is stuck on the picture of the iPod cable with an arrow pointing at the iTunes symbol. I've tried holding the two buttons to force it to shut off, it does- when I turn it on I get the apple logo so I know it turned on, only to get it again. When plugged into my computer, it is not recognized by anything. Going to Computer it doesn't see it as plugged in, and on iTunes nothing comes up with connected objects. This happened to me once in the past and I had to go to the Apple Store to have it fixed... can anyone tell me what to do so I don't have to go to them, or am I gonna have to take some time and drive over to have them take a look at it? Also, when removing my iPod from the computer, i get the sound that you get when you remove something from your computer, meaning it knows it's plugged in, just not reading it for some reason.

Thank you very much to anyone that can help!

If this is posted in the wrong area, this is my first loggin- sorry if I screwed up, mind telling me if I did?

I have the same issue.
Brand new iPod 4gen touch 32gb.
Connected to PC (xp) and configured no issues.
Downloaded the 4.3 software update and now I have a very expensive paper weight.
I spent over 1.5 hours on with tech support and was told to disable my antivirus and all security software.
I essentially took my PC down to a bare bones OS and still would get failed update error 9.
Tried the Factor reset as recommended by support and now I get error 1603... which is funny because I'm already in recover mode.
Since I can't currently afford any additional time on the phone with tech support, looking for some advice on what might work next.

So now that I have a few more minutes...

Brand new, and I mean just out of the box, iPod 4th Generation 32Gig device.

Connect it to our main PC and it is registered without issue.

Noted the iOS 4.3 update was requested so downloaded and tried to apply this update and end up with a failed to update error 9.

After talking with support for 1.5 hours am now here :
Stripped down my other PC to nothing running but iTunes and the OS.
If I simply restart the device and try to reload, error 9.
If I reset to factory reinstall I end up with with a failure with error 1603.

In essence I have a $250 paper weight.
Any advice appreciated

Sorry to double post, but I have an update:

I tried it on two other PCs and finally got one of them to recognize it. But now it demands that I update, and when I try to update it keeps saying "The network timed out". My network is perfectly fine, there's no reason for it to think otherwise. Meantime, I can't use my iPod. Sigh. Well, at least I have something new to tell technical support.

I had the exact same thing happen to mine 3 days ago. After updating, it works for about 30 seconds then dies. When I plug it in to my laptop (PC) itunes says the ipod is in recovery mode. I restore it to factory and it locks up again after 30 seconds and goes into recovery mode.
I installed itunes in my other laptop and it does the exact same thing. I tried to get online support but i guess after 4 months you have to pay to get online support.

My iPod Touch Gen4 has been bugging me every time I attempt to add music to it, because I haven't updated to the newest firmware. I've tried everything suggested here. Whenever I try to enter the recovery mode it just turns back on and goes straight the iTunes and USB cord picture of an un-synced iPod. I've taken my computer down to bare bones with no FireWalls or anything and still, nothing. ITunes doesn't even recognize the existence of the iTouch. I've un-installed everything that has to do with Apple and my iTouch. Then reconnected it, installed iTunes again, and tried to connect it. Again, nothing. And now I've been sitting here for the past 20 minutes on hold waiting for a technical advisor to help me...

iPod Touch 4G 32GB. I had same problem when I tried updating iOS; iTunes says restoring iPod, but after a while gives error 1603. I tried all suggestions from support: recovery mode, other USB ports, disconnect all other devices, uninstall and reinstall apple s/w and drivers, disable all other services using msconfig, confirm USB are 2.0, re-download updated software, reboot computer, name it! I finally installed iTunes on old Dell Inspiron P4 running XP, plugged iPod in it and device got recovered immediately! Put it back in Win7 computer and performed backup restore. Everything is back as it was. I have no idea what prevents s/w update on main computer. I realized I never get "waiting for iPod" message during attempt to restore, while I do on old Dell. I wonder what triggers this message.

since the update to 4.3 my ipod is a useless piece of junk. itunes keeps hanging, ipod does not show synced music, i spend hours and days trying to reset and rebuild it to no effect, i have never tinkered with the ipod, installed the latest itunes and seem to have plenty of people with the same trouble, getting useless generic advice from goodwilled but in the end incompetent bloggers. apple might really fix their software itunes and ipod such that it works ALWAYS!! not knowing how to fix something with the ipod touch 4g 32 is totally frustrating
