cross stitch pattern maker?

Just wondering if anyone has tried MacStitch 2011 for converting photos and other images to Cross Stitch patterns and if so did it work? any problems? or has anyone tried and used something else? This is for personal not professional use so I don't need all the bells and whistles. Would appreciate any feedback. There aren't a lot of programs like this in general and less for Macs.

You can use any bead chart / pattern maker.

I prefer them to cross stitch pattern makers, and they are usually free to use.

Set it for square stitch or loom work.

This is exactly the same as a cross stitch chart.

Most can print out the DMC floss numbers to match the bead colors.

The picture below shows how a beading program for square stitch or loom work would look.

I think it's detailed enough for what you want to do.

A MacStitch picture follows the bead one.

Inkscape is a FREE Mac app. to make bead charts / patterns.

I don't think the cross stitch apps. are worth the cost.

Use a free bead one.

Well they have a free demo, so you could download it and try.

I was going to do that, but I was annoyed that they require a password to install the demo. Doesn't seem that a cross stitch generator should require my admin password!

I did look at both MacStitch and Stitches. They both seem to have a lot of features and both have demos. so its just a question of looking at the features, comparing them and then probably rolling the dice. Probably either one will meet my needs. And MacStitch costs a little less, so I need to see what I wouldn't be getting. I appreciate both your and Rothrock's feedback. I don't think this is probably an overwhelming topic for this forum.

I did go to Macupdate as Klaus suggested in the feedback area and both programs were listed. MacStitch seemed to get a higher rating, but then I'm not sure what the + and - smiles meant there.

It might take more reading but have you looked at it from the other direction ?

Thank you. Cross Stitch is one of my favorite pastimes and I will definitely check both those sites. I just peeked at them and think I will like them very much. Amazing the information these forums provide. Another reason I am glad that I got my mac!
