windows bonjour printer offline

I am running Windows XP and have an Airport Extreme router with my usb printer plugged into the router. I setup my printer through Bonjour for Windows and I can print to the printer no problem. However, when I reboot my machine the printer shows offline. I cannot print no matter what I try. The only way to correct the problem is to delete the printer and re-add it with Bonjour. Then everything works again until I reboot again. Is there a fix for this issue?

The exact steps are different on each Windows OS, but the basic idea is, as administrator, set the printer as "use printer offline" and then back to "use printer online".

In Windows 7, the steps are:

1) Open "Devices and Printers" from start menu/control panel

2) Right click on the printer that is offline and choose "see what's printing" - this opens the print queue window

3) On the printer menu in the print queue window, choose "open as administrator" - this opens the print queue window again, but now as administrator (full privileges). You may have to give the administator account password

4) In the new admin print queue window, from the printer menu choose "use printer offline" - this item should now be checked

5) Go back to the same printer menu, and choose "use printer offline" - this should now be unchecked.

The printer should now be online. These steps are better than the other option (re-installing printer).

The printer should just go back online automatically. The problem is likely a timing issue during boot between when the printer gets setup and when the special Bonjour printing port is available. This is a software problem and not something a user can fix :-)

By the way, it is 2011 - time to give up on that classic for 2001, Windows XP. Windows 7 is as good as XP for stability and speed (unlike Vista when it came out), and has useful features 10 years of development can bring.
