My Ipod Touch 3rd Gen will not update

I have a 3rd Gen Ipod Touch, and it states on the website that this supported to update to iOS 4.3

However, when I try to update, I get the same error message.

"This version of the Ipod software (4.2.1) is the current version"

anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
I have the latest version of Itunes, I have tried 2 different cables, also I have restored my Ipod back to factory settings,

There is nothing else that I can think of doing, as there is no update anywhere for me to manually download, and it's getting rather annoying to say the least.

Are you sure that it is a 3G iPod? If it is a 8GB model it is a 2G which can only go to 4.2.1. See the following for how to identify the model:

Look on the back of your iPod Touch itself for any of these numbers.

iPod Touch 1st generation - A1213

iPod Touch 2nd generation - A1288

iPod Touch 3rd generation - A1318

iPod Touch 4th generation - A1367

You probably have the 2nd generation iPod Touch which is an 8GB model.
The 2nd generation 8GB iPod Touch was last offered in August of 2010.. I bought one in August of 2010 and the following month Apple came out with the 4th generation. There never was a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch.

I was having the same problem. Always thought my iTouch 8g was the 3rd generation. Guess not.

I thought mine was too.But I didnt know ipod touch 3rd gen only came in 32 or 64
