USB Eject ejecting keyboard/trackpad instead

Hey,

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13" i7 and I've installed Windows 7 along with the Bootcamp drivers. Everything's working fine except for when I connect a USB hard drive (not flash drive) to the second USB port (closer to the front of the laptop). The drive contents can be read and everything is normal except for when I try to eject it. When I click the button to eject the hardware, it says Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad instead of my USB drive. And doing this disables my keyboard/trackpad and I need to restart the computer in order for it to work again.

However, the strange thing is that this does not happen at all in Mac OS and also doesn't happen when I use the first USB port. It looks like, for some reason, Apple wired the USB for that port and the keyboard/trackpad all together. Am I right in assuming this, or is my Mac defective? Also, do you think that Apple could possibly fix this in a later Bootcamp update?

There has been a recent firmware update for Thunderbolt portables (2011) as of last week or so. I wonder if this has anything to do with the cause or solution to this particular problem?


As reference, the new FW version on the Pros should be MBP81.xxxx.B24


Unless you have told Windows otherwise, manual ejection of USB drives is not necessary. Idle drives may be removed without causing harm to the system at large.

I also have this issue, and it applies to both USB hard drive and flash drive attached to the second USB port.


One thing I notice is, everytime you plug a USB device, it will be listed in the Device Manager. For instance, if it is a hard drive, then it will be listed under "Disk drives".


I think there are two things you can deal with this issue.


1. just unplug your USB hard drive / flash drive without safe removal so long as you have the "Quick Removal" option selected under the "Disk drives" main tree on your Device Manager. I know that some of you might be uncomfortable with this way. I do feel uncomfortable doing so ... so, you can try the next option


2. disable your USB hard drive / flash drive listed under "Disk drives". As soon as you do so, your USB disk volumes will no longer appear on either the explorer window or the USB safe removal option. I suppose you would be assured that the device is safe to unplug. Of course, you will then have to enable the device again once you plug it in the USB slot.


So far, I think this is the best course of action, since Microsoft refuses to give a workaround and suggests that I contact Apple.


I still hope that Apple would have a look into this annoying issue... and provide a solid solution.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Sooooo so frustrating. Effectively means you only have one USB port you can use for external hard drives etc at any one time..



When re-installing Windows on a newly created partition the other day - after Windows booted normally, but before I installed the Bootcamp Windows Support drivers, I tested the USB port by plugging in my WD external hard drive, to see if the issue was something to do with the drivers Apple themselves were supplying [as part of the Windows support pack].


When I went to eject it safely, I could see that it was recognising the WD external hard drive - however this time, it was calling it a USB Receiver?? and yes, the system still froze when I ejected it 'safely'.


So, that little experiment didn't solve any mysteries except to suggest that the problem really is Windows based: both USB ports work fine when in the Mac OS, with the first port only becoming wonky after the installation of Windows [7 Home Premium: x64] and before the installation of the Bootcamp Windows Support Drivers.


In my frustratioin/desperation - I called Apple tech support here in Australia. The guy I ended up speaking to about it (a Senior Techy) said that his colleague had actually had a call from someone else with exactly our issue - but that he didn't know how to resolve it/it was left unresolved. I pointed the guy I spoke to, to this thread (and a few others I found on Google), and he recognised that this is clearly an issue that needs to be escalated, which - he is going to do. So - hopefully there will be light at the end of the tunnel soon, if someone hasn't already come across a fix that is.

I have the same problem but this seems to have it solved:


Boot to your Mac OS. The Keyboard Setup Assistant will pop out. Do what it asks you to do to set up your keyboard. Then reboot your macbook pro to Windows. Wait for a while (maybe it's installing the driver). When you see the keyboard light is on, you should be able to use your keyboard and trackpad again.


I am not sure if this is really the solution but my internal keyboard and trackpad comes back in Windows now.
