I've installed and re-installed the latest itunes 64bit on my win 7 machine. yet itunes will not detect it.
I've tried multiple usb cables. tried differnt usb ports yet to no avail.
every so often it will detect and let me sync but 99% of the time its an everyday battle to get my ipad to detect on itunes.

I have an iphone 4 that seems to detect fine. yet i can't figure out why ipad 2 wont detect. I've even restored my ipad 2.

I've tried everything I can think of.
I even formatted my computer, download itunes and install it on a fresh system and same problem.

I'm at my wits end. I can't understand why its so hard to detect it.

device manager sees it fine. but itunes locks up when i connect the ipad 2. if I disconnect it, itunes becomes available. Everytime I connect my ipad itunes throws a fit and becomes unusable for like 5 min, a very long pause as it thinks about something.

anyone have a workaround for this?

I went to the apple store and a tech there told me, buy a mac, that will sole your problem....seriously?
then he said or uninstall and reinstall. which I've done several times, that does not fix the problem.

Intel i7Core 965, Windows 7

    Hi,

If you haven't tried disabling your anti virus software and turning off the Firewall, do that then restart your PC and the iPad.

    Try syncing.

    yup i tried that too.

what i dont understand is why does it sometimes detect it?
I'll reconnect the usb cable maybe 20 times anf finally itunes sees it
it finds the iphone each time but the ipad its very flaky. When I had the ipad 1, it was not a problem,. this is a new problem with ipad 2.

    so frustrated.

    troubleshoot path

    1. try another cable to make sure it's that that

    2. try connecting to another computer to verify that your computer is not the issue

    3. if both 1 and 2 fail your ipad2 is periodic defect and need service

Also make sure you're connecting to a usb port that's literally at the back of the computer, and not at the front or side or an external usb hub.

I updated to iTunes 10.2.1.1 and now my iPad is no longer recognized. This is a real pain... It appears to be a problem with Apple.

So glad I stumbled on this particular post. And unfortunate that no seems to have a solution. I have the EXACT same symptoms: brought back an iPad 2 tonight, and it took me about 10 times to connect/disconnect the USB cable, change port on the PC, change the USB cable, rset the iPad, etc, before iTunes would see it. The PC recognizes it fine, but iTunes freezes until I disconnect the USB cable. Very annoying.

I've also tried starting iTunes before and after connecting the iPad 2, to see if it would make a diff.

I was able earlier tonight to have it recognized, to sync everything up. But now it's acting up again.

PC runs the latest iTunes 10.2.1, iPad is now on the latest 4.3.1, and the PC as well as iTunes sees the iPhone 4 fine everytime, and runs smoothly otherwise for everything. I do believe the 'handshake' between iPad 2 -> iTunes is somewhat not working.

[ADDITONAL COMMENT] Forgot to mention: I had a iPad 1 before, and it was also working fine every time.

    I had the same problem.

Got a brand new Ipad 2

    It wouldn't sync with my Lenovo T410 Win7 x64.

It would sync with my Dell Xps Desktop Win7 x64

Problem is I use my laptop all over the world, since that's my business issued computer, so it's where all my contacts and stuff are that I need on a daily basis.

I upgraded the laptop to iTunes 10.2.1.1 and upgraded the iPad to 4.3.1.

I called Apple Support, spent over an hour on the phone with them. They referred me to my local apple store. I went into the Apple store ... spent an hour there ... and nothing. So they ordered me a replacement and told me they'd call me in a few days.

I got home and decided to keep messing with it. I disabled my antivirus/firewall (kaspersky) and all of a sudden, it flawlessly syncs.

Yea i had sync issues until i disabled my Zonealarm firewall. Of all the things to suspect, the simple firewall was not even on the list, go figure. Windows 7 built-in firewall has no problems with itunes thankfully.

I am running into the exact same problem with my friend's iPad 2. Her windows 7 machine can detect my iPhone 4 just fine, but her iPad 2 doesn't show up even after I disabled both windows firewall and Microsoft security essentials (the only protections on the computer) and reinstalled iTunes. The iPad shows as not charging from the minute the computer boots up until windows is logged in, at which the iPad just acts as if no cable is connected (meaning it just says the battery percentage instead of Not Charging), but the iPad shows p in device manager as an unknown device. However, it doesn't show up as a digital camera like the iPhone. Please help!

I had the same problems like the topic starter.

What worked for me was pulling off the cable out of the PC, connecting the cable to the iPad2 und than connecting the cable to the USB-Port, then the iPad was recognized by iTunes.

I have the same problem. There is another thread here with the same issue.

Same here, got on Friday my iPad 2. It gets detected and works fine with my Work PC that runs Windows XP but my home PC with Vista will not detect it. It brings up all my other Apple devices, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Nano only my new toy is dead meat... I am very disappointed about this and Apple needs to pay attention to this issue that seems to spread!

Same here. This sync fail is getting old fast. Why can't we sync over wi-fi?

This is a long shot maybe but, how many people are having the problem after the pc is coming out of hibernation or standby?
I think maybe the USB driver is not waking up correctly.
I found a setting in control panel to tell my USB ports to not hibernate and so far it might be working.
Have to try a few more times though.
