I have an iPhone. That's not the issue. I want to be able to do reliable text messaging on the iPad2 as well.
Can anyone explain to me why the iPad does not have a text messaging program like the iPhone???

What do you mean AIM??? Does AIM provide an iPad capability for texting??
JoAnneRN - I'm considering an iPad and one of the questions that I have deals with messaging from it. The AIM (Apple Instant Messenger) service via iChat allows you to text with people on your contact list - so it's similar to the messaging capability of the iPhone. But, just as making telephone calls can be done with the iPad via SKYPE, it's not as convenient as using the iPhone. That said - don't look for the iPad to integrate these niceties from the iPhone into the iPad. In my opinion, these two product lines are far too valuable as independent revenue streams to ever integrate into a single stream. Test plus sounds like a good option to message people from the iPad that are not AIM chat partners.

Surely if there is a 3G capability, and a phone number associated with the iPad, then it should be able to send and receive text messages.
