How to turn the ipod off

Hello,
I can't figure out how to turn the ipod off. When I press the sleep/wake button, the screen goes to black, but the ipod keeps playing until it needs to be re-charged.

Make sure you have the latest firmware update then hold down the sleep button for about 2 seconds (you will see the spinning cog)

I supposedly DO have the latest firmware update (it downloaded last week when I synched my ipod) but, still, even when I hold the sleep/wake button for a few seconds it does not shut down. I am charging the device every day and that is really annoying, requiring me to purchase the charger adapter for $30.00 so that I can plug it into a socket rather than my computer. I'm really disappointed with this product.

When you are holding it down for 2 seconds you are seeing the spinning cog and then the screen goes dark?

Confirm you have the 1.1 update. Connect your nano to you computer and in iTunes go to the summary screen. Make sure it says 1.1 where it lists the software version.

When you turn it off using the sleep button, don't hold it by counting. Hold it until you see the little spinning daisy wheel. Once you see that, let go.
