Turning off the boot up chime

How can I stop my Mac pro from making that very loud sound that you always get upon starting my computer? I've looked at every setting I can think of but if you can do it to a windows computer why not a Mac?

Mac Pro 2009, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

The old trick used to be to put a headphone plug in the jack. But I am not sure that works now that software seems to control the speaker to headphone transition.

Open Sound preferences, select the Output tab, select Internal Speakers in the list, adjust the volume to a lower level.

I have stereo speakers hooked into that and the sound comes from the computer's built in speaker. I'm looking for the way to permanently change this, I hate the idea of not being able to find these settings. Does anyone know where they are?

Not changing the subject, but how do I get the start up chime to come in on my external speakers? One thing I missed on my powerpc desktop macs was this feature that the chime or bong would work through external speakers and not internal..

Has anyone figured out a way to do this?

go to http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16425/startupsound.prefpane, download the file, open the Disk Image and run the installer. Head over to System Prefs, and click Startup Sounds, then check the "Mute" Checkbox. You must not be running Mac OS X Lion Or Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
