Apple USB modem chipset?

Does anyone know what chipset (if any) is used in the new Apple external USB modem? System Profiler says it's Motorola, but nothing more specific. Motorola makes a product called 'SM56 UbiSurf software modem' that it says "is designed to meet the specific needs of the desktop and portable PC OEM. UbiSurf software gives manufacturers greater flexibility in platform design while offering significant cost savings, because it greatly reduces the amount of modem hardware. In a nutshell, the SM56 is:
• Lower cost,
• Smaller,
• Lower power,
• Easily software upgradable,
• Available in USB, PCI and AC-Link form factors."

The specs seem to align with the Apple modem.

The reason for my question is that I'm trying to locate the right driver for it with Windoze. When I try to dial out through the Apple modem from Windoze XP or 98 running in Virtual PC - after I tell Windoze that it's a V.90 modem (V.92 is not an option) - I get a Windoze error message that says it gets no response from the modem. But if I trell Windoze that it's a 'standard' modem, it dials just fine (but won't synch with the far end).

One way to check is, in Windows open HyperTerminal, select the "COM port" under "connect using" that it thinks the modem is installed onto then without dialing any numbers issue the command ATI. Also try ATI1 then ATI2, etc. That sould report back information directly from the modem.

Well, I tried ATI3 first - to get model code; I already know it's Motorola (ATI0). VPC locked up tight, requiring a forced quit. That, in fact, is the ultimate problem I'm chasing. I can't get XP to talk to the modem at all without locking up VPC (I have another post on that matter). Win98 will talk to the modem, however. Bizarro.
