Here we go again....10.6.7 doesn't kill anything

In the words of the famous fictitious spy series protagonist, James Bond, "Always have a backup plan." That is true regardless of what computer you have, anytime you install anything new, you should have at least two backups present. They can be printed or digital, but the point is, you don't have to recreate anything from scratch. 10.6.7, like any update is there to improve or add features of an operating system. It is not there to fix pre-existing conditions that make a system slow, or inoperable. If your system is unhealthy, backup, or use data recovery, and then ask for help here how to solve your problem. Make sure all your software and hardware is known to work with the update before applying it. Ask here if uncertain first. And remember updates don't kill anything, they only shed light on hardware or software that may already be marginal because they are sensitive to that.

Well, I updated to 10.6.7 last night, and it went flawlessly. seems a tad snappier, probably due to me having some permissions probs with the old files...

However.... this didn't solve my thermal problem...this seems a good place to ask this, seems to be a heap of knowledgeable folks here 🙂

this rig doesn't want to STAY running when booted COLD. runs like a screamin' Comanche when warm-hot....kernel panics when starting from cold (overnight shut down), or if left off for more than an hour or so....

to fix this I re-boot to an external drive on which I have DiskWarrior, and re-build the dir..... then I switch back, and by then it seems to warm up enough to stay running...Any thots? I have 16 gigs of OWC's finest ram in it.... ? ?

I know, I know, "Just leave it runnin' ... LOL

Thanks.... and thanks for an entertaining read ... 🙂

Since you're new to the Discussions, you may not be aware that posting a different question (which had nothing to do with the original topic) tacking onto another topic - which wasn't a question - is not the best way to get answers, and is considered threadjacking.

You'd be much better off starting your own topic and ask your question(s) there.

I know this isn't exactly a fine tuned thread, and there's been plenty of digression, so maybe this isn't the best place to call you out on this, but your question really doesn't belong here. I know on many smaller boards it isn't frowned on, but it's kind of the etiquette here. Things quickly become unmanageable otherwise. If you post your own topic, people can more or less narrowly focus on that alone. Don't be put off.

I asked my question HERE for one simple reason :

it appeared that there were some very knowledgeable people here in one place that would be interested in an unusual problem....

I will, from the response I have rec'd, take it that that is not the case.

and if you re-read my original post, you will find that the first half of it WAS on topic.

Never mind, I'll wind up fixing it myself anyhow, I always do.....

Still the system functions fine for my needs. Never had a problem with security. The old statement "if it ain't broken, don't fix it " applies.

When it comes to network security, that old saw is of dubious worth. Unless you are on a truly closed network -- one that has no connections whatsoever to the outside world (which obviously does not apply to anyone posting to these forums!) -- you cannot be certain that the known security flaws in your outdated OS version will remain unexploited indefinitely.

Effective security is an ongoing process, not something that can be achieved once & for all. Thus, the "never had a problem" argument no more justifies not applying security updates than it does not making & maintaining backups.

The time to do both is before you have problems, not after.
