ATV2 Netflix streaming - continually a disappointment

Ok, this post is just to vent. Last night I decided I just had enough with my Apple TV 2 and its inability to stream Netflix content.

Usually, I will get some number of minutes into something from my Netflix instant queue and the ATV2 will stop playing and give me the swirley 'wait' icon while it tries to buffer additional data. Usually, this is something the unit never resumes from. I always have to exit back to the menu, restart playing, and I can get further into the movie from there.

I am using a hard-wired ethernet connection, not using WiFi. Apple Airport Extreme router and Comcast high-speed internet cable modem (at least 10 mbps download speed).

I've played with my ATV2 IP settings, tried DHCP and static IP, tried using Google DNS entries and tried using my default DNS entries from Comcast.

Seemingly none of this makes a difference in getting ATV2 to stream Netflix consistently.

Last night, when one movie failed to play on ATV2, I switched over to my Tivo HD unit which has Netflix built-in and the exact same movie played flawlessly from start to finish, no buffering issues.

The Tivo HD and Apple TV are both plugged in, using ethernet cabling, to the same router.

I'm an Apple fan boy. But I have to recognize something for what it is... This conculsion is not based on a one-time or small sample set, this is a CONSISTENT behavior, a failure of Apple TV to provide the experience Apple advertised/intended, and which I exect.

Apple TV -- you stink for streaming Netflix. Sorry to say it, but compared side-by-side with the performacne of Netflix streaming through you vs. another box (Tivo HD), you lose every time.

Interesting to note that Apple TV experiences NO such problems streaming content from my local network. I can stream ripped movies from my iMac all day long, no buffering or delay issues. But when it wants to go outside the firewall, I won't even try anymore.

At the moment of truth, when the consumer decides, this consumer decides AGAINST Apple TV 2.

    Well all I can say that I have had no such issues. I am sorry to hear of your esperience. What is yout internet speed out of interest?

    I am having the same issues with my ATV2 as well. I know for a fact it is the ATV2 because I also have a Sony Blueray player attached to my system that streams Netflix as well.

    I get pause after pause with the ATV2 and then immediately switch the same movie streaming from my Sony with no such pauses. I hope there will be an update for this issue as I much prefer the ATV2 interface over the Sony.

    I was wondering why some people use the ATV2 to stream NetFlix when they have an alternate way that apparently streams better.

    I haven't tried to stream NetFlix on my new unit as I prefer to watch new movie releases with other methods and in truth, there just aren't that many Hollyweird movies that I want to spend 2 hours with. I have streamed a few movies from my laptop that ran smoothly.

    My stream gripe is when I try to stream a string of photos. The ATV seems to have a hard time keeping up with the stream and there are a lot of annoying pauses while I wait for the buffer to refill.

    I have the exact same problem. We use the ATV2 primarily for Netflix streaming; we don't have a blue ray player. Sometimes we'll get through an entire movie or several kids' shows before it loses connection, but all-too-often it drops connection from my home network and won't work again unless I log out and sign back on to my network. Very frustrating

    The only movie I watched so far on my ATV2 was an iTunes rental. I selected it, but didn't get around to watching it for a day or so. I believe the entire movie was streamed onto the onboard memory chip which I've heard is either 8GB or 16GB. Regardless, when I played the movie, there was absolutely no stuttering.

    I guess a way to prove this one way would be turn stream a movie in, then turn on the home network and see if the movie would play from the ATV2.

    Anyone know if NetFlix movies are routed through Apple servers before connecting with an ATV2?

    While I'm not a "NetFlixer" and doubt I'll even give their 30 day tryout a shot, I'm wondering if this NetFlix "problem" would go away if people would allow more time before starting the stream. And would a NetFlix movie spool onto the onboard memory chip (if there is one?)

    I have the same issue with ATV2. About 3/4 way through a movie, it stopped and looked as though it was trying to download, but could not finish the movie. I turned it off and picked up my iPad, went to the Netflix App and hit resume and watched the remainder of the movie with no problem. Please let me know if anyone finds a fix for ATV2 streaming Netflix movies. Seems to me it is an ATV2 problem not my WiFi speed or connection. Thanks,

    That's just speculation, it could be a problem on Netflix or a combination..not knowing your setup or speed I can only assume. It does work flawlessly for me as well as a lot of others..hopefully it can get sorted out.

    Call Netflix and see what bandwidth your Apple TV is getting compared to other devices you use for Netflix.

    Here's what I'm consistently getting:

    iMac 20mbs
    PC Laptop 7mbs
    Apple TV 0.9mbs

    Clearly a software issue. What are you getting?

    Same issue here, I just posted about it as well.  I can play NetFlix just fine using my MacBook, but some items just won't play at all on the Apple TV, same with some purchased through iTunes.

     

    Very frustrating indeed.

    Just wanted to add my experience. It seems like this rarely happens on short Netflix videos (20-30 minutes), but almost certainly happens with anything longer than that. Still seems random though. And if I switch to my computer, it plays just fine without interruptions. This appears specific to my AppleTV, although it does seem a bit less common with the latest software update. Still annoying nonetheless.

    Sorry to hear of your problems. I rarely have any problems with ATV2 streaming from Netflix. Maybe once in 8 months? I am connected wireless via our Time Capsule (which is connected to the ATT Uverse router. It could have something to do with the way you have your system set up. I am no techy, just a thought.

    Well, I am glad to see most everyone else is having the same issue with ATV2. I want my money back. using it is a very frustrating experience. If anyone has found a solution please post it. Thank you.

    That is simply not true. In the big scheme most people are not having the issue. Those that are either have a problematic network or are experiencing issues with certain servers.
