Does the iPad have any moving parts?

No moving parts. No spinning hard drive, so less heat reduction needed. Can't say what heat dissipation design is present, but since the back of the case is aluminium, that certain helps.

Heat build up seems to be minimal and rather rare.

After having used and aluminum MacBook for a couple of years, enjoying it's warmth in the winter and buying a lap desk so that I could tolerate it in the summer, I was amazed at how little heat the iPad generates. And I'm talking about after hours of continuous use. Mine has never even really gotten warm.

They will overheat if taken outside in direct sunlight on warm days. If the iPad gets too warm, it shuts down. However, they're very hard to use in direct sunlight anyway.

The iPad 2 has a gyroscope but you would never be able to tell it's moving since it is so small.

Yes, and the switches and home button also move. I don't think that's really what the OP meant, however.

Assuming the iPad's gyro is like the one in the iPhone4 it does not rotate. See:
