Q: Font problems after 10.6.7

I'm getting lots of strange behaviour relating to fonts since updating to 10.6.7. This is all in things that used to work perfectly.
PostScript output causes errors in Distiller (problems in font definitions); and manipulating PDF objects can cause embedded fonts to become .... unembedded.

As I understand it, there were lots of security fixes to font handling in the update, but it seems to have caused loads of trouble.

The developers for an app I use, Imposition Wizard, have confirmed that things aren't working as they are supposed to and have filed bug reports with Apple.

However, as I do a lot of work with PostScript and PDFs, I will have to reinstall the OS to 10.6.6.

A new twist: my manager has a brand new macbook pro with 10.6.7 and is able to print PostScript fonts just fine. Our two brand new iMacs with 10.6.7 will not.

    Curiouser and Curiouser...

Type 1 or OpenType? There is no trouble with Type 1 PS.

It was the same font that wasn't working on the iMacs: Myriad Pro

And I was just noting that "it" isn't even close to the same thing for everybody. That means that everybody that can should submit a bug report or Apple feedback with as much detail as possible about what symptoms they see & how to reproduce them. That should include version numbers of the Adobe (or other) apps involved, full font names & their version numbers, & anything else that might not be the same for everybody.

It would not be a bad idea to include some of those details in posts here as well. If nothing else, that might help folks figure out if one of the several proposed fixes in this long topic might work for them.

I have created a standard installation package to fix the Adobe font issue.

It replaces only the affected ATS.framework binaries with the 10.6.6 versions.

    You can get it here:

Hey, it works! I checked my most f'd up app, LiveType, the one app I really don't use anymore, well it was having issues from day one, open a doc, the text would be stretched, missing letters, the works, I have opened a few offending docs, and voila, no more issue, thanks KJ, you are the master!

Very true. The more info Apple gets (and simply the more people who complain), the faster the problem will get the attention it should be getting.

I only patched the ATS.framework, which I assume is only for "Adobe Type Set" fonts.

The open type fonts are, most likely, handled by some other module.

For what little it is worth, ATS stands for "Apple Type Services," the system-wide service for all font types.
