Opening the special characters window with shortcut in Pages vs. Safari

This must have been posted before but:
Why is it that I can open the Special Characters window with the option/command/T shortcut in Safari but not in Pages ?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Japanese keyboard, English language

Guess I have a partial answer : in Pages option/command/T hides the toobar. Next question is : is it possible to assign a keyboard shortcut to the menu function Edit/Special Characters ?

Yes you can assign a keyboard shortcut to any menu item in:

+System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts+

Helpful but I can't seem to be getting it right. In the Application Shortcuts, I created a new entry for Pages only with "Edit Special Characters..." and ⌥⌘Y (since ⌥⌘T is already used).
And it does not work... And too bad we cannot send screenshots here.

The menu item is not "Edit Special Characters..." but "Special Characters..."
At its end, there are not three dots as you typed but an ellipsis character.
On my French keyboard, I get this one with option + period.

And if you use ⌥⌘T, like in many other apps, it still works and the shortcut for Hide Toolbar just vanishes.

It's why the Help urge us to take care to already existing shortcuts.

You may continue to play the game and link ⌥⌘Y to *_Hide ToolBar_* 😉
