Sharing time capsule over internet using bonjour

I recently purchased a time capsule and set it up to wirelessly connect to my home network. After some reading I've found out that I can access the time capsule when away from home. I've read that there is normally a spot to check "share disks over WAN" but I have "share disks over the internet using bonjour". Now I have tried to share the disk using bonjour and I can't figure out how to access it after this step is completed. Can anyone help??

Thanks

Describe your full network setup..

What you should be using in the router is the WAN address of the TC.. not the main IP address. You are passing packets to the WAN not lan interface.. but tell me the whole setup and then we can work from there.

Thanks for replying! I want to be able to access my attached external hard drive over the internet with a mac.

I'm using an airport extreme updated to firmware version 7.6. I'm running a standard wireless network.

I have standard cable internet, nothing special. I have a 1GB external hard drive plugged into the USB port. I have set up an account with no-ip.com for dynamic IP addresses updating similar to what dyndns used to do. I couldn't find the free dyndns service on thier website anymore. I have no-ip.com's software installed on my mac to auto update the IP address for the host regularly.

I have turned on file sharing under the disks menu in airport utility and set up a disk password. Turned off guest access and turned on share over wan. I DID NOT turn on share over the internet using bonjour.

Next I went over to the advanced tab and then over to port mapping. I clicked the plus to add a new service and chose Personal File Sharing. I chose a random set of the same 4 numbers to input into public UDP and TCP port fields (something in the 5000 range). And I used port 548 for the private UDP and TCP port fields.

Then when I went to add the private IP address to map to it will only let me use something in the 10.0.X.X range. The problem is that the Airport Extreme summary page says that my router's IP address (not the public one) is 174.97.XX.XX. This scheme isn't even an option for the router's DHCP server (like 10.0.X.X) so I'm confused. Can I not map to the router itself?

The purpose, of course, is to be able (on a mac) to go to Finder>Go>Connect To Server> and then enter in "afp://blank.no-iphostname.com:port number" and have it map to my hard drive attached to my airport extreme.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ok, just to be clear.. you have a cable internet modem.. but it is not a router!!.

If that is the case and the WAN address you quoted is 174.97.xx.xx that is indeed a public address.

And you also have checked share over wan.. that means the disk is exposed to WAN side as well as LAN.. so any incoming connection to the public IP on port 548 will connect to the hard disk.

There is no port forwarding required. It is not needed.

Let me suggest you try to connect using the public IP. (Using whatever the current IP is).

ie afp://174.97.xx.xx do not set port.. that is wrong.. you are then requesting the connection on the wrong port. What port is used by the remote computer to make the request is irrelevant, as long as the request comes into port 548.

Let me also suggest you do this using a separate wan account from your own house so you can quickly redo settings. I would also suggest you leave on the guest account just to do the tests, to make sure you are not running into password issues.

I've been busy so I haven't yet had a chance to try this from a different network, but I will and I'll let you know.

I'm not sure what you meant with regards to the router comment. My Cable modem is just a regular small cable modem, nothing more.

As for the external IP versus the internal IP, I think this is where I am confused. I am not sure which one is which in the menu settings.

And If I understand you correctly, because I am not forwarding to a computer on my network, I don't need to port foward since I'm only trying to reach the airport extreme base station. Correct?

Also, please take a look at this screen grab. Note that there are two IP addresses listed here, and I'm assuming the one at the top is the external IP. At least, that's what I think.

Thanks, you're correct. I don't need to port forward. I tested it from an external network and it worked fine.

Just to re-cap for everyone who might need the info:

How to Share Over the Internet a Hard Drive attached to an Airport Extreme:

if you have an external hard drive plugged in via USB to an Airport Extreme, the best way to share it out is to first go to www.no-ip.com and sign up for a free account. Download the app that runs in the background on your mac and will update your external IP automatically. You do this because unless you've specifically signed up for a static IP address from your service provider, your IP will change periodically and you need to know what it is if you're going to connect to it from a different outside network. When you sign up for no-ip.com you can choose from free host names like "yourname.serveftp.com". The app on your computer will update this name with the latest external IP of your base station so you can connect to it anytime just by typing in "yourname.serveftp.com". More on that later.

Next, plug in your USB hard drive to the Airport Extreme.

Next, Open Airpot Utility on a mac connected to the Airport Base Station's network. Click on Disks in the top menu. You should see some info listed about the hard drive attached. Click on the File Sharing tab. Click the box called enable File Sharing. Go ahead and secure it with a password, I suggest using "with a disk password" so the password you choose will be different from everything else. I would also suggest not allowing guest access. Next, click the box share over wan. Do not check the box about sharing over the internet using bonjour.

Click the Update button in the lower left hand corner and that should do it.

Go to someone elses network and on your mac's finder, click Go>Connect To> and in the top address bar type in your no-ip.com host name such as:

"afp://yourhostname.seveftp.com"

It should prompt you for a password. Enter in the password you created for File Sharing.

Leave the username alone, it's meaningless.

Boom. That should work.

I have made the same as "fredfromclumbia" proposal using no-ip account but now i have a new problem from other side. Now i get the following message whern I try to connect from other network:

"There was a problem connecting to the server “xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx”.

The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.

Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again".

The point is that I use to connect from outside to my external Hard Disk plugged to my Airport Extreme through the "Connect to server afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" with the only problem that when my ISP change the IP needed to find "whats mi ip". The only change I made recently was the update to Lion OSX but Im not sure my problem is with this update. When Im connected to my network at home I can see my HD and my printers also and work correctly but now suddenly the external connection stops suddenly.

I hope for some help

Thanks

Jose,

You need to download the no-ip.com application that runs on your mac in the background and updates your external IP address which maps it to your no-ip.com hostname. Once you have it downloaded and installed, go to it's preferences and make sure you check to have it run on start-up.

The whole point of using no-ip.com is so that you don't have to input your external IP address everytime you want to connect because it changes. With no-ip, all you have to do is go to Finder>Go>Connect to and type in afp://yourhostname.no-ip.com instead of the specific IP address. By doing this, you will always be able to access your Airport extreme/TC attached hard drive no matter what the IP is because the no-ip application on your mac updates your hostname with the current IP address.

I know that's a lot of info, hopefully some of it helped!

Thank you for your help. I have made as your advice and have a NO-IP dominion with an automatic update of the dynamic IP but in any case I get the same answer from the system, as I show following in the image:

I have heard there is a problem with the AFP protocol and new securities from Apple. Do some one knows about this and the solution?

Thanks for any help

I have my TC as a downstream router behind another router. There is no way to avoid that since I have FTTH and I have to use the router provided by my ISP.

Tesserax has explained that his solution does not work under that environment, but is there any turnaround? I have an static IP. Can I forward certain ports of my FTTH router to my TC internal IP for instance? Any other alternative?

I've been trying to share the time capsule over the internet so i could access my files in my office. I have a huawei HG530 router connected via ethernet to the time capsule, and time capsule (4th Gen) extended wi-fi by airport express (first gen "n"series).

I Dont have a Static ip, and i request one whitout success to my internet provider.

I wanna know if there's a way (file sharing over the internet) easy or hard one whitout paying anything to do it whit the conditions that i have

I using the latest firmaware for the time capsule wich is = 7.6.1 The latest version of the airport utility wich is = 6.1 , Im running on Mountain lion 10.8.1 on a macbook pro 9,1

Really thanks for the help

The easiest is to pay for icloud.. and use btmm.. although you may have some issues with the setup, ie you need to bridge the modem and use pppoe on the TC.

But if you want to do it direct you can.. if the huawei has a ddns client.. set that up so you know the IP address of the WAN .. and then port forward 548 to the TC..

Use AFP remotely to access the TC.. that means you must use a Mac..

Please google..

remote access time capsule..

There is a zillion hits..

Teserax,

I get stopped on your second step:

"Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection

o Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address"

There is no "Internet Connection" under my Internet tab on Time Capsule (version 7.6.3, Airport Utility version 6.2))

It looks like the rest of your steps are completely different too.

I have mine setup as the primary wireless router.

I see lots of talk about bac to my mac but as I understand it, that is remote desktop, not TC disc access.
