It's possible that the video on your iPhone 4s is in 1080p which is not supported by the current generation AppleTV.

UPDATE: Looks like it's an ISP problem for me.

The ISP I am with has all traffic going thru proxy servers, except for https traffic apparently.

I have tried renting a HD movie on a different ISP and it worked fine. I have aslo tried another HD rental on a another person's internet using the same ISP as me and it didn't work.

The ISP has acknowledged that the proxy servers could be the culprit and are issuing me with a non-proxied IP address.

I'll report back with the verdict....

    cheers!

    FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!

It was indeed the ISP's proxy server. I am now able to watch HD content!!! yoohoo!!

I am getting the same error on youtube videos on Apple TV, but only on certain videos. I can watch some things, but not others (which makes me think it's not related to any of the other errors like ISP proxies or HDMI connections). Any ideas?

I encountered problem about a week ago with my AppleTV attempting to rent a movie. I received the error mesage for three straight attempts. I have a second AppleTV in my house and was able to stream the content. I went back to the one in which I encountered the error, unplugged it for 30 seconds. When I turned it back on I was required to sign into my Apple account. The movie was able to load and play with no interuptions. Today I encountered the same error while trying to rent "Paul". I turned off my AppleTV by using the sleep now option. I then unplugged it for approximatley 10 seconds. After turning on my AppleTV I was able to stream the movie and was not required to re-sign into my Apple account. My internet connection is strong, approximately 16 mb/s. I think it has to do with my AppleTV device though am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.

I hope this can help find a solution for everyone.

I got this error the other night while trying to stream the Paul McCartney live concert on Feb 9, 2012 from my ATV2.  I reset the ATV2 from the remote and still got the error.  Unplugged ATV2 and still got the error.  Set my DNS to Google DNS (8.8.8.8) and still got the error.  I never could get the concert to play.  I finally had to play the concert on my MacBook Pro through iTunes and use Airplay to my ATV2.

It's very disappointing when you can even stream a video from Apple that they were promoting to watch the concert live on your ATV2.

When it comes to the ATV2, I'm afraid Apple's slogan "It just works" doesn't apply.  Pretty poor performance Apple.

I don't know why we all put up with apple's garbage. I too own so many apple products and it's frustrating to have to keep your fingers crossed every time you decide to use one. As I stare at this constant unfixable error on my tv I have to resist the urge to fling this crappy little black box like a frisby two yards over. I have a Nintendo wii from the first year it was released still streaming error-less since the moment it was purchased. I also own a roku box which has yet to produce a single streaming error. Then I decide to purchase an apple tv and it has been nothing but a problem since. Would usually go through all the power cycling stuff and it would usually correct the problem. Now it appears the issue is here to stay. Thank you again apple for taking my money and leaving me with an inferior product. If Nintendo and roku could keep their products working then why not apple?! The wii is a gaming system and offers the ability to stream as a bonus, yet its apple TV's single function and it still doesn't work right. My phone is up in a month and I was planning on purchasing an iPhone, but who wants to deal with the headaches.

Apple stop worrying about money and make your products work!

    Hey everyone,

I think I fixed it for now at my house. I tried all the solutions stated here and none worked. Software updates, reboots, restores, etc.  Then I moved my router from the other room, into the room with the Apple TV and tried one last time and it worked. No joke. That was it.  (I use an Apple time machine router).

The router was located up stairs but almost within line of site of the Apple TV. My computer usually sits in between the router and the Apple TV which may also cause a problem since the computer has to stream to the router, then the router has to stream back through that WIFI signal mess to my Apple TV. Once I moved it directly in line of site with the Apple TV, I had no more issues.

In your apple TV go to Settings>General>Network and look at your signal strength. Mine was at 4 bars and was not working. Now that my router is in the same room with the Apple TV it has 5 bars and works fine.

Aferr11 - don't be so ridiculously dramatic. Have you considered that maybe you were fooling around with something and caused it yourself?  That's what happened to me. I've had three AppleTVs now; the first-gen, which worked perfectly, a second-gen to replace it which worked perfectly, and then bought a second gen2 for my bedroom. I began getting this error for the first time tonight - never had a problem before, ever. I was trying to play a home movie over wifi...no rental from Apple's servers, no ISP problem, etc.  My own movie, that I know works.  Got the error repeatedly and was frustrated like the rest of you.

I realized that I had been trying to troubleshoot a USB disk issue with the airport extreme earlier, and I likely did something that the router didn't like. I restarted my router, quit iTunes, started it again, and magically it began woring again. Saying Apple's products are garbage just makes you look stupid. They work extremely well in most situations for most people. But everything has issues from time to time...and often the issue is user error.

I had been getting this message for a couple of days both on personal content and Netflix.  Today, it was happening every couple of minutes and made the movie completely unwatchable.  I followed ray sharpe's steps and it worked perfectly.  It seems to have been a HDMI handshake problem for me, too.  I didn't have anymore issues for the rest of the movie!  Thank you!

Crow, go _ _ _ _ yourself. You have scrolls upon scrolls of multiple people complaining about the same issue, but yeah, it's user error, I know. I'm in the IT business for close to 12 yrs, what can we say about you since you are arrogant enough to make a blanket statement against every user on this blog claiming a similar error?! Then again, let me retract that question - You are most likely an apple employee, which would explain your reason for being so defensive. Besides, you speaking on behalf of every apple users experience claiming user error makes you look ignorant. I guess you have investigated everyone’s equipment personally that is on this blog. You would think I insulted your wife or something. Then again, your Mac probably is the closest thing you will ever have to a wife. I could care less about your individual apple experience, so save your stories for one of your lonely Saturday night pimple popping sessions.
