Q: To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

Some of my apps have available updates but this is the response I get when I try to update: "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." I am bewildered since I only have one account that I am already signed into. How do I get the apps to update? What account is the app store talking about?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

    Thanks rastajellyfish.

    Nothing else worked.

Your fix worked for me -- for iPhoto.

    To clarify, I went:

    • Apple menu > Software update... (opens App Store window again)
    • Menu bar > Store > Sign out
    • Apple menu > Software update... (opens App Store window again)
    • App store window > iPhoto Update
    • Dialogue box opens asking you to sign in with Apple ID and password; do so
    • The update begins!

For iMovie, I get a dialogue box telling me "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."

I never knew that! Off to solve that one now.

I was trying to fix the problem in my iphoto app for last two months. I tried almost all suggested option and was on the verge of rebuying the product from my id, but it worked for me as Stuart suggested .

    Thanks Buddy

Sign out while on the update page, then click to update the app and put in your usename and password.  It should update. Amazing that you could spend almost an hour or more with Apple, but this simple workaround fixed it for me.

This worked for me after the Spotlight fix didn't. Simple is good!

Please. I am too confused. What does it mean to "trash" the app from applications folder. Do you mean the i movie and i photos app? those are what I am unable to update. When I go to the appl folder I also do not see the install app. What next, what is safe to do?

    thanks

    Rich

    I fixed it for myself:

         1. Closed the app store

         2. Opened Spotlight settings and dropped Macintosh HD drive into the "Privacy" area.

         3. Downloaded "FindAnyFile" (Google)

         4. Searched for the file with FAF and found a couple of rogue com.****.plists and loginitems affiliated to it.

         5. I moved the files to the trash.

         6. Removed Macintosh HD from spotlight privacy.

         7. Opened MAS, checked purchases page. The app in question had a siny new "Install" button.

         8. App installed successfully.

Yep it's the Spotlight indexing. Don't delete the apps! Just enable indexing for Applications. You may need to use Cocktail to check that Spotlight indexing is enabled for the drive in question. I did not need to restart my computer, just the Mac App Store app, after the indexing finished.

This is the only thing that worked for me.  I tried the "hide from spotlight" and "move to another folder" but neither worked.  In fact, when I moved it to another folder (trash) and then "put back" it was just the same file.  The only change was that the update went away on the app store.  So it wasn't really up dated since I still had iMovie 9.0.5 and the up date was for 9.0.9

I had to ask to speak to a senior support representative, who instructed me to remove the adoption.plist file which was in /Library/Application Support/App Store for me.  Afterwards, I was able to Accept iPhoto and iMovie in the "Purchases" page and then finally update them.

What did not work: Re-indexing spotlight, trashing and putting back apps, logging out and back in when prompted.

Still not exactly sure what caused this, since I don't remember having any other apple IDs.  It's been over two years since this thread started. Apple: it would be better late than never to fix this.

The reindexing of Spotlight, followed by waiting 5 mins or so, worked for me to get xCode 5.0 update.  Thanks everyone!
