sudden change in tempo when editing voice recording

Hi,
am working on a podcast and doing minor voice editing. When clipping out a section (such as cough or sneeze) and rejoining the remaining portions, I inadvertently get a change in pitch (and tempo) of the remaining recoding segment (not the one before the cut). How can stop this from happening, and how can I recover from the change once it's happened?
