How do I prevent normal the text alert while talking

So how do I get my new Verizon iPhone to not scream in my ear every time I get a text message while talking? I would think the smart phone would be smart enough to know when it is not being used and needs to have a loud ringer from the other side of the room or inside a pocket. It knows when I am texting and the subtle swoosh is nice. It would be great if that was the noise I got while I was using the phone for other things.

(Seriously Verizon? you brought an iPhone to market that was not global?)

You can make ringtones for free but NOT text or alert tones.
If you have a Mac, use Garage Band to make them. You can also use iTunes to make them but I like using Garage Band. If you use PC then use iTunes to make ringtones. Google for the instructions for both ways. Both are very simple.

You also cannot get rid of tone in the ear while on the phone without putting phone on mute or turning off text alerts as mentioned already.
