Can't adjust recording level with M-Audio Fast Track Pro

I downloaded the appropriate driver for my M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface & everything looks fine... BUT I can't adjust the Recording level at all. I am not sure if this is an issue with the M-audio device, or garage band??? It is driving me crazy, since I just want to make some music and can't even hear what is being recorded. ???

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Is the green signal indicator light coming on, on the fast track?

Try switching the line/instrument switch or using the PAD switch?

Is the track record enabled, choose the correct input channel in track info window?

Thanks, .... Yes to all of the above. I am wracking my brain & will call M-Audio tomorrow. Everything looks perfect on the interface & on garage band - but, even though the Fast track Pro shows up in my sound preferences & I can select it as the input & output source, etc., when I go to its window, even hooked up, it says no "device is not connected." Then it details that there are "no input controls" under sound in system preferences. I have two working usb cords & it does the same on either. I think this is the problem & have no idea how to fix it. I just want to plug it all in and record & have lost So much time

Did you choose the fast track in Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi?

Yes I did. It doesn't register any record volume control. It records faintly.... I can't figure out who to contact, whether my Fast Track Pro is bad, or whether I have yet to finish the process.

I have the same problem: my USB mice is not adjustable (periodically

), nor automatic recording level is working. So, practically I could not record from this mice (Samson G-track). Sometimes Garage band let me to adjust the recording level or to check-in the box of Automatic recording level, but in 80% of cases it is just keeping the recording level at zero level without respond to commands. It's quite irritating.

When using usb/firewire interfaces the garageband track input level is disabled because the level is determined but the interface. Many interfaces will have some type of level control, hardware or software.

The samson G track looks to be two channels. Make sure you choose the correct channel in the track info window.

Yes, but:
1. It periodically let's me to check the box or even to adjust the rec. level manually. . Is it depends on the moon phase? Do not see any correlation with anything....
2. Yes, the mic has them, but the mic's controls do not influence the recording level (it's still too small, rather zero).
(It's not influenced by stereo/mono mode).

I have an M-Audio FirewWire Solo, so I'm not sure if this will help you or not. But the way this works is the input level is controlled via settings in the Audio MIDI setup application in your Applications/Utilities folder.

By default, the installer has the input levels all set to max. It is intended that you use the hardware knobs on the interface itself to tweak the actual level, to just below clipping.

So I'd first check in the Audio MIDI setup for that interface and see what the input levels are set at. Maybe they're below 0db? Then adjust the knob on the interface for the input you are trying to use.

Maybe a bad usb cable

(It's not influenced by stereo/mono mode).

Did you try channel 2 Mono?

Ive got a similar problem:
I'm running a FastTrack into Garageband '08 and experiencing something similar.
I've got a signal that I can hear and modify in the 'track info' area, I can record and playback fine... everything is adjustable and available except for the recording level- I can adjust that on the FastTrack of course, but on the Garageband interface, the recording level slider bar and click box for automatic level control are grey and not available for adjustment.
What gives?

The input level is controlled by the fast track therefore garageband has no control over the fast track.

The same thing is happening to me using an M-Audio Profire 610 interface connected to a keyboard and mic. The control panel of the interface shows good input. Yet nothing gets into GarageBand '11. The recording level in GarageBand is stuck on the far left (zero) and I can't make it budge.

Any ideas?

Sorry! I'm new to this type of support so did not know how it works. I thought the M-Audio FastTrack Pro was similar enough to my Profire 610 to include in this discussion.
