I have an iPhone 3GS that I got in Oct 2010. I haven't had any problems with wifi until now. I had the 200MB data plan and noticed I was at 450MB two wks ago. I knew there was no way that could be right as I haven't used more than 65% any month. So to avoid two $15 extra charges, I changed to the 2GB plan and I updated my phone to version 4.3 to see if that would fix the problem.
I figured out yesterday that my phone is using 3G when I'm on wifi on my home network (nothing has changed in our network settings). I know I'm connected to the network because I can use the Air Video app when on wifi but cannot on 3G and it was working fine. I reset my network settings & reconnected to my network. I checked it again today and it's still using 3G. Any ideas?!
When you run the Settings App and select Wi-Fi I presume that you see your Network listed and if it is connected it will show a tick (check mark) to the left of the Network name.
Yes that's correct. It's showing that it's connected to my network, had a check mark & is showing the wifi symbol at the top.
My husbands iPhone 4 doesn't seem to be having a problem with his using 3G on the wifi so looks like it's something wrong with my phone and not the network.
I have a suggestion to help you re-establish a connection with your Network.
From Settings, select Wi-FI then select your network (tap on the small blue circle with the arrow symbol at the right) and then select "Forget this Network" from the next page then tap "Forget".
Go back to the previous screen (tap Wi-Fi Networks at the top left). You should still see your Network listed but the check mark will be gone which indicates that it is no longer connected.
Tap the Network name to select it. If it is a secure Network it will ask for the password.
Ok, I'm doing that now. I'll test it again later tonight to see if that works when I'm back home on my wifi. I also have an appt at the Genius Bar tomorrow if it's still not working right.
Update to follow.
Great to hear that you've got it sorted out. Keep an eye on the Data usage. When you are accessing the internet you should be able to see the activity reflected on your home Router which would tend to confirm that it is using Wi-Fi rather than the 3G Network.
