How do I delete photos in iPad not currently in ITunes?

I'm doing this for wife who has iPad, (1st gen; not new iPad 2). When she got it she wanted, "her photos," from her computer in her iPad. Happy to accomodate, I managed to load all 3,000 photos from her Nikon Picture Project software into her iPad. Now she does not want that many and I've been trying for a month to delete all of them. They are not in iTunes or I'd uncheck them there and re-synch, which, I'm told would wipe them out.

I simply don't know how to delete them.

Can anyone help? Thanks,
Dennis

I would try a couple of things. Forgive me if you have already tried them.

In the 'camera roll' view that shows thumbnails of all the photos, select the "arrow in the box" icon at the top right. This gives you the option to email or Delete photos. You must select each photo to delete; rather tedious.

You could sync with iPhoto (or other picture processing software if you do not have a Mac) and then use iTunes device manager to indicate which albums or individual photos that you want on the iPad.

Third, if you have the photos saved elsewhere or still on the camera, Restore the iPad, either to the back up that is saved from the last iTunes sync, or as new device.

Good luck and best regards.

Thank you for two replies. For the first, if I had these photos in iTunes, I doubt I'd have this problem, but they are not there.

Landoncube, thank you. I tried the camera roll and clicked the arrow-in-box, however, on this iPad, the only options presented are email, copy and print. NO delete option at all. I would even undertake to delete all 3,000 individually if I could find a way. Interestingly, the Spokane, WA, Apple store had was no help either.

My wife has a lot of stuff in this iPad so I doubt she'd want to, "restore," to original configuration.

You mentioned sync'ing with a photo software...I loaded these photos from Nikon's Picture Project software, but I don't know how to link that software into the iPad. ??

So I'm still where I began -

First of all, sync'ing to delete will only work for photos which were originally sync'ed in from iTunes, which these were not.

I have no idea where or in what structure the photos you loaded in from the Nikon app now reside, but I'm going to assume that they all wound up getting dumped into Events (and might still reside in the Last Download album also?).

In Events, for non-sync'ed files, the process goes as follows:

a. Open the folder
b. Tap the Share icon, upper-rt. of display. You'll see lots of new buttons appear. One of those will be a red Delete.
c. To delete a single pic, tap it to select (√-mark) then tap Delete.
d. To delete multiples, tap&hold on the first one you want to select, then swipe (an S-curve going back and forth over the lines works well) to select the rest of them, followed by tapping Delete.

Sadly, there is still no bulk delete, no 'Delete All'. You'll have to work page by page, but I've gone through it and it's really not that terribly onerous.

Landon, about half the photos are still in her desktop computer. Of course, all 3,000 or so still reside in the iPad.

Michael, I've never noticed the iPad coming up showing, "camera." Next, I'm looking for, "events," and expect you are referring to something in the iPad itself. So far, I cannot even find, "events."

Am I missing something? (Evidently I am)

Here's an idea: plug the iPad into the computer and get out of iTunes. Either cancel the sync or let it finish and close the iTunes program. With iPad still connected by USB, go into My computer or Computer in your Windows menu. The iPad should show up as a drive or device like an external hard drive or a flash drive would.

Explore the iPad by clicking on it there in the devices in My Computer and try to locate the photos in that way. If you can see them, you should be able to copy and paste them to another locate on the hard drive.

Good luck.

I have read responses on deleting photos and still don't understand how to delete. Nothing happens when I mark the photos on the iPad and tap the delete button. I have now deleted the photos from my computer so if I could erase all my photos I could resync and get only the photos I want. How can I erase all my photos from the iPad or is there any other way to get rid of unwanted photos?

I don't know. Maybe you are.

When you look in the Photos app on your iPad, what tabs are available to you? Where are your photos actually stored? In my installation, for example, the choices are Photos, Albums, Events, and Faces. If yours are different, what are they?

I have photos imported from iTunes, from email and other places, and directly from several cameras using the CCK. The techniques I outlined work for all except those imported from iTunes.

Well, Landon, I cannot access anything to, "explore." "Camera," does not come up at all, anywhere, to access photos, etc.

Michael, when I touch, "photos," on her iPad, I get photos/albums options, top center. No other options. When I touch an album, I get the thumbnails within that album and top right options, "slideshow," and the right-arrow-in-box. Left top is, "album," to return to album index. Touching the top, right arrow-in-box and then selecting an individual photo gives me the top-left additional options of, "email, copy and print." Nothing else.

Once upon a time, many weeks ago I managed to come up with a red delete option somewhere, but it did nothing. I haven't been able to find that red delete since.

In no location can I find events or faces on her iPad.

I've tried to delect some photos from her desktop Nikon photo program, then synch'ing the iPad to see if they drop out, but it appears no delections occur on the iPad.

At this point I'm at a dead end.

I think her iPad is a pretty nifty gadget but Apple's user-engineering is sure in the toilet at this point.

HERE IS THE ANSWER:

Use your Mac computer and open the "Preview" application.

1. Connect your iPad (and/or iPhone).
2. Open the application named "Preview" on your Mac (Click on the Macintosh HD icon or open the Finder application and search for the application named "Preview," then click on the application to open it. Or look under Macintosh HD > Applications > Preview.)
2. In the Preview application toward the very top of your screen, click File > Import From Camera (then click on the name of your iPad or iPhone)...
3. Near the lower left corner of the Preview application, click on the icon with the four tiny squares. That will give you a better view of all of your pictures.
4. Select the pictures you want to delete.
5. Click on the red delete icon at the bottom of the screen. (Looks like a red circle with a slash through it.) That will delete the pictures.

I hope this helps.

This is great for Mac users, but what do you do if you're a PC? I have tried all of the suggestions here, and none work for me consistently. One worked for a couple of pics, but that was all. I have quite a few pics I want to delete, but can't find a way to get them off. I too, have a 'delete' button that comes and goes with no rhyme or reason and when it 'comes', it doesn't work! I punch it and punch it, and it does absolutely nothing. Apple really dropped the ball with this one.

This works for iPhone, but not iPad. No pictures show up in preview as they do with iPhone.

BTW, Command/Click, as usual, allows multiple photo selections and then click Delte button to delete many photos.

Too bad this doesn't work for iPad.

ive noticed that the red delete button only pops up when you go to all photos then fullscreen then edit but it will only delete photos impoted directly to the ipad.

FOR PC USERS

1. sync your ipad

2. open my computer or computer from the start menu.

3. go to pictures. it will be on the left side of the window.

4. go to the ipad photo folder

5. right click on the photos you want to delete and click delete or delete them all by deleting the ipad photo folder or delete an album by dleting the folder containing that albums pics
