Upgrade Server Admin Tool

I just completed a fresh install of OS X Server Snow Leopard. I ran the software update for 10.6.7, however, my server admin tools did not update from 10.6.5. to 10.6.7. I downloaded 10.6.7., but I get an error that says, "Server Administration Software can't be installed on this disk. Server Administration Software must be installed on the same volume as Mac OS X." What's frustrating is that I haven't changed anything. OS X won't allow me to select the disk that it is on. Admin Tools 10.6.7. doesn't appear in the software updates. How can I update 10.6.5. to 10.6.7?

Oh by the way, I had no problems updating Admin Tools on my iMac.

Reading the detailed list of updates from the 10.6.7 tools update, there wasn't a huge list of stuff that changed.

I'd expect these updates should pop out with an update for Mac OS X Server, if they're needed.

(And it would not surprise me to see the version numbers of some of the pieces not change; that's happened before. You may already have the updated versions; cross-check the version and build numbers and see.)

The tools download applies to installing the administration tools onto a client box.

Ah, I'd wager that your DNS is messed up. That's the usual reason for the server tools to go all unfriendly and harsh.

Launch Terminal.app and incant the following:

sudo changeip -checkhostname

to get an indication whether DNS is happy or is cranky. You'll need to enter your administrative password to pass the gates of the sudo command.

I have the same issue, updated to 10.6.7, downloaded and updated server admin tools to 10.6.7 and about is showing it as 10.6.5.

I downloaded 10.6.5 and re installed it. the dates of the packages changed. upgraded server tools through software update, same thing, about shows it as 10.6.5 but the copyright is 2010 and the package date is newer. I think apple screwed up and didnt change the code.

in about this mac, installed software, also show it as 10.6.5 but no longer does 10.6.7 show up in software update so it knows its installed.

I think that it indeed is 10.6.7 code but with some bad or improperly changed plist info or something.

Welcome to the forums.

This is definite fodder for confusion, but there doesn't appear to be an issue here; maybe a forgotten version number change?

The Server Tools 10.6.7 download includes Server Admin, and that reports itself as version 10.6.5.

(I don't have a server with a 12-character serial number to check for the fix listed in the [Server Tools release notes|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3931], but that looks to be the core of the change here.)

(This isn't the first time that all of the tools haven't tracked the bundle version, as well.)

ebrind: The Server Tools are integrated within Mac OS X Server, and the installed version of the tools track with the installed version of Mac OS X Server. There is no need to install the tools directly on the server.

The Server Tools do get installed on the client boxes.

Crashes imply some particular issue unrelated to this current thread and the version-confusion discussion.

Please start your own thread, and please particularly post some details of the crashes you're seeing.

Crashes could be a hardware problem, or software, or some sort of a configuration error.

If you want to attempt a brute-force resolution (and there's not enough information for me to be even remotely certain that this will help here; this suggestion may well be premature), create a full disk backup using the distribution DVD and an external disk (which you should have in any case), download the combo update for Mac OS X Server 10.6.7, and install that.
