Setting date and time

Hello, I updated today to a new software 4.2.1 and since then, the ATV is stuck at "Setting date and time", I can press menu and get everything else, but I cannot login to my iTunes account. Any of 2 of them.

I do have some port forwarding internally but has nothing to do with internal->external traffic. I have also disabled it and keeps with the same issue. At "About" I can see "Network Time Skipped (reachable)"

Any idea what could be wrong?

Also, why cant I see the 4.3 update?

Ok, Since I posted several days ago, I have tried to get the time and date to set but still am awaiting a answer from apple. I have a cisco Dlink router which has all security turned off. Still not able to set time and date.

I have tried to manually set the time zone, but that has no effect. I guess apple does not want my money from rentals.

Is there a moderator of this forum who could provide help?

When does the next software release come out?

I've had this issue multiple times. I took the password protection off my wireless network, set date and time to 'auto', and then unplugged the unit. Then I plugged it back in. When the 'setting date and time' screen appeared - I walked away. Eventually, it will get past this screen to the normal home screen. Each time this has solved the 'nothing happens when I click netflix' issue; and if it doesnt, i simply am able to go into settings and connect to the wireless internet manually just fine. The only discrepency is the time it takes to get last the date setting screen. I've seen it take 10 min, I've seen it take around 18hrs (seriously). I hope this helps some folks.

Hey guys.. So I had this problem last night (Sept 6) out of nowhere with my Apple TV 2 and found this thread. I thought I would put my thoughts down of frustration and success..

Internet was working fine. Macbook pro worked fine on my network. iMac worked fine. iPhone worked fine. Apple TV 2 just would not accept my iTunes password even though it was working on all my other devices. My homeshare password is the same as my iTunes account so no problem there.

I checked for an Apple TV 2 software update but was updated.

I figured out the problem was this: Apple TV 2 somehow got kicked off the network and lost the current date and time. When I unplugged the Apple TV 2 from the power (not just turned it off) I let it restart. It took about 10-15 minutes to get the date and time, but after that my iTunes account password worked!

Try these steps if you are having this problem.

1) Disable and re-enable homesharing from the computer you are trying to connect with. (this works most of the time)

2) UNPLUG Apple TV 2 from the power for about 30 seconds and let it restart again.

3) Allow it to set the date and time (make sure to set your date and time settings to "automatic" before you do this) It might take it awhile to set the date and time. That's OK. Make sure it does this.

4) Re-enter your iTunes account name (a secret I found is that there is a "recent" tab on the top right of the keypad so you don't have to keep RE-typing it)

5) Re-enter your iTunes password.

And you should be in business because it knows the date and time.

It was a frustrating evening, but with a few steps and patience, I was up and running again.

I had this problem.

It wouldn't connect to iTunes or Home Sharing until the Time was set.

The instructions say you set Dat and Time under Setting, General, Network. However, there is no option to do that - only to select the Timezone.

I tried setting the Timezone manually, as oddly enough I am not that close to Cupertino. This still did not work.

Then I tried setting the Timezone to Automatic. It kept the Timezone I had selected (London, UK) but after that it did eventually work.

Wish I had known about the 'recent' option. Must have entered my Apple ID and password about 20 times.

Now it all works, except I can't work out how to turn the thing off when not in use. Any help there please?

andrew aka anbacon is the man. i followed your steps after getting stuck in date/time lock after upgrading the software...and IT WORKED 100%...was down for a week. Appreciate the step by step instructions...i think turning off home share, turning back on home share on computer, then rebooting the ATV is the key! Thanks!

I've had the above problems the past few weeks, and I've tried all the solutions. In my experience, I get the "Setting date and time" message when I first power-on our equipment and then immediately switch our AV controller to view Apple TV on our TV set (instead of first switching to the cable box for a while). Very annoying.

What I have found is that if I simply wait for 0-4 minutes, eventually the regular Apple TV menu comes up. This agrees with what Andrew said above.

But, heh, heh, I found that if I press "Menu" on the remote, after I get the "Setting date and time" message, then the regular Apple TV menu comes up immediately! What's more, everything seems to work fine. Even the time zone, when I check under "Settings", is correctly set to Pacific Coast (i.e., Cupertino).

Those of you still having problems might simply try pressing "Menu" when you get the "Setting date and time" message.

I wish Apple would really fix this problem, but in the meantime...
