phone shuts off after locked

My phone worked perfect until I had to update it to iOS 4. Immediately afterwards my phone was extremely slow, and once I pressed the sleep button or it would auto-lock itself, the phone would shut off. It isn't a power off because when I try to turn it back on I have to hold down the home and sleep button for it to reset. Then when I try to shut the phone off completely the thing in the middle of the screen just spins non-stop and finally shuts off when the battery dies or I reset it again. Whenever I have my phone plugged in and it is charging the problem never occurs. I restored my phone a couple of times and the problem keeps happening. Someone please help me.

You restored your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup? If you haven't done the latter, give that a try.

I restored from my old phones backup and also from factory settings and neither of them did anything

If restoring as new without using a backup didn't help, you have a hardware malfunction that needs evaluation by Apple.

Apple may offer an out of warranty replacement for $199, if they determine that the phone wasn't abused. If it turns out to be a bad battery, they will replace the battery for less if not, 3rd party iPhone repair centers (locatable by Google) may be able to repair it for less.

So there is absolutely no other way to fix this other than by sending it to Apple? I've read online about a whole bunch of other people who had this problem.

If there were, I would have told you already. If restoring the phone as new, withtout restoring your backup didn't fix it, as you said you did, there is nothing further YOU can do, unless you have the electronic test equipment and technical expertise to repair it yourself. (If that were the case, you wouldn't have to ask.)

I've read online about a whole bunch of other people who had this problem.

In that case, you must have also read about the solution that helped all of them... So why are you asking for us to help you?

Apple doesn't pay cash for trade-ins. If you decide on an out-of-warranty replacement, they take your broken phone and replace it with a refubished phone for $199.

Yes, by you paying $199 plus applicable sales tax. $199 is Apple's "repair" price, which pays for an exchange for the same model at a significantly reduced price off what was the full retail sales price for the iPhone.

I don't see me spending $200 on a 3G phone when I own a 3GS. I'm just scared when they come out with a new iPhone that my 3GS is going to do the same thing.

If you own a 3GS, you posted in the iPhone 3G discussions area. Regardless, Apple's out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price pays for an exchange for the same model. If a 3GS, the exchange will be a 3GS.

Don't be so frightened. Hardware can fail at any time. There is no conspiracy here. If there were such a conspiracy then every single iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.0 or later installed would have failed, which is not the case. Conspiracy theorists of the world unite!

Hahah I bought a 3GS after my 3G didn't work after a while, my 3G is the one with the issue. I just never got around to posting anything about it.
