If you have EVER run Tinyumbrella or a similar program that will kick the phone out of Recovery mode you will have to edit your hosts file and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. The programs add an entry that blocks access to Apple's activation servers.

The other possibility is security software on your computer or router that is blocking access to gs.apple.com on port 443.

Finch
The phone started to freeze the other day and then worked again
Then all of a sudden it went to 30 pin cable and iTunes logo
Every time I restore I get a different code last 2 times I have gotten code 1002
And 1013 a few times. Have tried on 2 mac's and 3 pc's tried two different
Routers. None have firewall or spyware or so on. I have tried
The gs.apple.com on my 17" but not on my 12"
I could not find the gs.apple.com comand on the 17" so I will look on the 12" and on
My pc tonight. Not really to big a deal just want to see if I can fix it or not
As I got my first gen back to life the other night after 2 years no function
AgI thanks for you help

Error 1002 usually means a hardware problem. If you've tried several known working cables, the problem is likely in thte phone itself.

+"Error 23, 28, 29, 40, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1611: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article and also attempt to restore while connected with a known-good 30-pin Dock Connector cable, computer, and network to isolate this issue to the device. If the MAC address is missing or the IMEI is the default value (00 499901 064000 0), this can also confirm a hardware issue."+

Dave,

Glad to hear you fixed your phone. How did you do it? I have a 3GS stuck in recovery mode with the dreaded 1002 error code coming up each time. Sometimes i get Error Code 9 but mainly the 1002. Have tried numerous cables and both my Mac and my wife's PC. I am covered under my bank account insurance for accidental damage to the phone but as i took over 48 hours to report the problem as i was trying to fix it myself they have thrown out my claim. As usual they always worm their way out of paying up. Any help much appreciated.
