Update to 10.6.7 causes printing problems

Did Apple change the printing framework somehow in this recent update? All the computers in our office now cannot print properly to our Riso HC5500 printer. The same problem also with our Ricoh printer, which would suggest that something in the system changed. I've been able to identify one of the fonts as perhaps problematic with 10.6.7 whereas with prior versions, this font was fine. Thoughts? Anyone else experiencing printing issues?

According to this article entitled "OpenType PostScript Fonts Troublesome in 10.6.7", at http://www.tidbits.com/article/12078, it appears that the OSX 10.6.7 introduced problems in the PDF system handling OpenType PostScript Fonts.

The workaround would be to create a PDF (make a PDF service) which is opened in Acrobat and then printed.

This will ultimately require a system fix from Apple.

Actually, with the documents we found could no longer print in OS X 10.6.7, we found that converting them to PDF didn’t fix the problem either. You’d end up with PDFs that either wouldn’t print or that couldn’t be opened properly in Adobe Reader X. The base cause of the problem seemed to be due to problems in how OS X 10.6.7 dealt with OpenType fonts and certain Type 1 Postscript fonts during printing and PDF creation.

What worked for us with OpenType fonts and MAY also work with Type 1 Postscript fonts is to convert them to TrueType if you have a relatively small number of them present. I posted some suggestions for how to do that in the "main" thread on the problem here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13323072

I have the opposite problem since updating to 10.6.7 -- I can print text but not images. JPG and PDF do not print correctly - I don't think it has a thing to do with your printer. I went back to Apple downloads and reinstalled the printer drivers, but that did nothing. This is a major interference with my work, so a fix better be coming out darned quick!

After update to OSX10.6.7 our Canon IPF 6300 printer no longer prints text neither from pdfs nor from VectorWorks. Drawings/pictures come out ok, but no text. From InDesign text is fine. No problems whatsoever prior to update.
Newest Canon driver downloaded. Tried different settings in the print dialogue, nothing helps. Is a disaster for our business.

It appears the bug has been agreed to: a poster in the Macintouch Reader Reports posts:

'Apple has confirmed the 10.6.7 Font Bug. Whoever here has submitted a bug report with Apple most likely also received this reply from them:

"This is a known issue which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 9127802. The original bug number being used to track this duplicate issue can be found in the State column, in this format: Duplicate/OrigBug#."

This does not tell is when it will be fixed though.'

I'm having the same issue. At first I thought it was a problem with a printer at a client's office. But when I returned to my office and tried to print the same document from a different Mac to a different printer, I got the same garbled text. I tried converting all fonts to outlines then saving as a PDF. While the PDF's all look correct, the printout has some spots where fonts do not print properly. The problem still appeared even when converted to outlines!

The only suggested workaround is not to use Open Type Postscript fonts. Unfortunately due to client needs, that is not an option for me. Doesn't Apple know there's a lot of designers out here who suddenly find themselves unable to print proofs for clients because the 10.6.7 update broke something??? We need help immediately. Where is Apple on this issue?!

I'm being told that this is a printer driver issue and that I'll have to get the driver update from the printer manufacturer to fix the issue.

Since Apple have admitted to the bug elsewhere it's possible that the person you spoke to is not fully up-to-date; though of course when don't know when a fix is coming or whether it will take the form of another system update or will indeed require an update to drivers - the former seems more likely as making PDFs seems to be the process worst affected.

After updating my iMac Late 2010 i7 to 10.6.7 I had the font problem (fonts are strechted vertically, looks like arabic...) with MyriadPro when printing from Filemaker 9 to my GCC postscript printer. First printout only some letters are corrupted, the second printout is even worse. PDF creation crashes AcrobatPro 9.4.3

This font problem had occured once in 10.6.6 but after running the disk utilty fixing the permissions everythin was ok.

Now, in addition, Indesign CS3 is not printing at all to the Konica-Minolta magicolor 7450 color postscript printer. Result is an error reply from the printer. The same file prints perfectly when printed from my Macbook Air with Leopard on it.

Trying to go back to 10.6.6 with time machine resulted in a grey startup screen with endless circles of the startup carousel bars ( or what that thing is called). Now I am back to 10.6.7 printing all my stuff from the Macbook Air.
