Same problem. Intermittent software bug. After hard reboot, works fine for a short while. Then freezes up and only way to get back to the home screen is to reboot. Have tried an complete software reinstall twice now. Wish Apple would own up to these software bugs and offer some constructive advice! I guess headed to the Apple Store, sure is inconvenient for a piece of equipment this expensive!
I had the same issue and thought it was a software bug since the 4.3.1 upgrade. After speaking with Apple tech support, I found out that I had 2 weeks left on my original warranty. Rather than pay $30 for an advance replacement, I bought AppleCare for $69 which gave me advance replacement and extended my warranty for another year.
After installing my backup on to my replacement iPhone, the home button problem is gone. I guess it was a hardware issue after all.
I back to being happy with my iPhone!
After watching the WWDC keynote speeches yesterday, I really looking forward to iOS 5 for my iPhone and iPad.
Cheers.
Bud
count me in, same problems after upgrade the OS
Brought mine to the genius bar and was praying that the button failed with the guys, I put it on the counter and after explaining the problem he pressed the home button and it failed, he had to keep pressing it about 5 tines before it responded. He looked at mr and said " your getting a new phone today" 10 min. Later I was out of the store with a new phone and haven't had any problems with it.
I posted on the 2nd June I had this problem through all the firmware updates on my second iPhone 4 which was swapped for a totally different fault back in July last year. I lived with the internittent home button for nearly a year but finally got fed up with it and booked an appointment at the genius bar manchester. I now have a brand new replacement and I can categorically say this phone does not have the home button problem :-D
I posted in early May that I was having this issue as well as my fix. I have not had the issue any more on my iPhone 4 or my iPad! Granted there may be a few hardware lemons out there, but for the most part I promise it is a software issue! I have not had the problem in over a month now and that did not involve getting either device replaced.
Same issue here with my iPhone 4 after upgrade to 4.3.3... 😟
Same problem here. The problem has been VERY PRONOUNCED (Read: Happens often and requires 5-10 presses of the Home Key for it to respond) after I upgraded to iOS 4.3.3 (8J2). I keep manually killing apps and turning off and on my iPhone to no avail.
If Apple's answer to this is to "restore" then Apple must have missed Steve Job's vision. This is BAD user experience. Steve is all about the user experience.
Restoring the iphone is not a fix. It is a band aid to an increasingly frustrating user experience on the iphone.
Well, I finally gave up after resets, restores and setting up as a new phone. I went to the genius bar, explained the problem, the genius ran it through a diagnostic test and swapped out my phone saying the button was defective. No problems with the new one for three wonderful days. My phone was actually past it's warranty but they swapped it anyway. Still seems strange that it happened after the update, but all is well with the new phone
I started having this problem about three weeks ago. It's not constant, but comes and goes. I can't figure out what the common action is that stops my home button from working. I have done complete restores and that doesn't fix anything. I'm hoping it's a software issue that can be fixed with an update since my nearest Apple Store is nearly 100 miles away. I find it odd that Apple has made no mention in this forum.
just started to have this problem with my phone. and what do you know my warranty expired two weeks ago.. Any suggestions??
Thanks,
Mike
Same problem here too: Home button is very quirky. I just wonder if Apple is "listening." Probably not, just counting their revenues.
here's a solution! found it on another site:
"Had this problem intermittently for a while, blew into the charging port as someone suggest below and hey presto!"
it actually works.
also some folks suggested pressing the iphone around the home button and then the home button will work. hope this helps.
You probably need to re-calibrate the home button. To do so follow these steps
1.) Open an application
2.) Press and hold the power button until the slide to shutdown swipe bar appears.
3.) Release Power button
4.) Press and hold Home button Lightly until screen returns to icon screen
Finished, your home button now works as good as new.
Got the same problem with with my iphone 4. Started in 4.3 for me.
But the problem comes and goes, the button can work perfect for a week and then suddenly it comes back. I thought it was a Hardware problem but after this thread im not sure anymore.
