I'm having the same problem. Started after I upgraded to 4.3.1. I knew I should have just kept it at 4.3 where it worked fine!

I have the same issue with iPhone 4... was fine until the very minute i upgraded to 4.3

was hoping 4.3.1 would fix it.

Is this issue only affecting iPhone 4? my wife has a 3GS running 4.3.1 and the home button is fine.

have other bugs now with 4.3.1 but it's not related to this thread, think i'll go past an apple store.

after restoring the phone and the backup without the emoji pack the home button seems to work a little more properly for some time - after one day it's getting worse.

    it's a mess that you cannot downgrade to 4.3 oder 4.2 ..

Thanks for the cleaning tips from some, but this is 100% a software glitch with iOS 4.3.1. My iPhone was working fine until 4.3.1. But that could have been just a coincidence, and it got dirty. But I just bought an iPod Touch @ WalMart. Home button working fine, fine, fine. THEN upgrade to 4.3.1 and bamm!! Home button often takes 2-3 times to start up. I'm now just hitting the sleep/lock button.

Hopefully Apple will issue a fix for this soon. In other news, I can really tell that my iPod Touch (4G) has half the RAM as my iPhone...

So this seems to be a known issue. Has anyone got it fixed by restoring the phone through iTunes?

Just wanted to confirm: I have the same problem since upgrading to OS 4.3.1. Even in "sleep" mode, the home button does not respond. Never had the problem before.

I upgraded my iPhone4 to 4.3.1 and started to notice this problem.
Several days later I updated my wifes iPhone and she also noticed this problem.

This is not a hardware problem, this is a software problem.

I now closed every application on my iPhone (which was not that easy, since to close applications you have to press the home button twice), and the problem disappeared.
So it definitively has something to do with some application.
If I figure out which application causes the problem, I'll post it here.

hm, the problem is solved until two days, home button working fine. didn't change anything within iOS, all apps kept. such a strange problem, i can tell you!

in another thread here in this forum a user thinks the problem is also hardware- as software-based. on warm, dry days, the problem disappears. when it's muggy the problem appears! in the moment it's warm and dry in my hometown in germany. a couple of days, the day the issue appeared, it was raining and i was standing outside waiting for the bus. perhaps it has something to do with the weather?! can anyone confirm that? i mean, we're already two who recognized that already..

I also have this problem. iphone is useless without home button i have to keep rebooting it to switch apps. New to iphone so was wondering how long it usually takes for a new version of software to come out?

At some point, it's like the chicken or the egg. It could be hardware related... but that is usually solved with software. Apple generally doesn't have you send in your phone, they update the software to solve the hardware issue. The problem is that happened almost instantly of installing 4.3.1. I used my iPod for a couple hours after buying it. Then I did the upgrade and bamm. There was no change in weather from one moment to the next. It was a nice day.

You could find two people to agree the sky is green... not that I'm putting down your argument for a hardware issue. Could be either, could be both. I really don't care which, as long as I can get it fixed. Yesterday I had to hit my home button 7 times (I counted). Only other option is for me to take it to Apple and if they can't downgrade me, I'll request a new iPod.
