Got the same problem with with my iphone 4. Started in 4.3 for me.

But the problem comes and goes, the button can work perfect for a week and then suddenly it comes back. I thought it was a Hardware problem but after this thread im not sure anymore.

This procedure did not work for me. Pressing home button does nothing. I had to hit the Cancel button to get out of the power off screen.

Are you pressing it once or holding the home button slightly down? Hold it slightly down untill the home screen come back.

    good luck.

No matter what I do. Press it lightly once, press and hold for 1 second, 2 seconds, ...

None of this works. The only way to get back is to hit the Cancel button.

I have iPhone 4 for about 6 months. Had the same problem. I had to press about 5-15 times to make it work.

#1 Most likely we work in dusty area.

#2 and + if we have too many apps running it slows down the processor.

1-Clean your charging port with tooth brush

2-use air blower blow air around home button

    3-blow air into charging port.

DO NOT USE MORE THAN 1 PSI of pressure.

DO NOT BLOW INSIDE OF SPEAKERS

    - it is fixed.

If this is didn't solve the problem try Youtube video clips.

Over the months I have enjoyed reading all the various weird and wonderful "fixes" for this problem. I am happy to announce mine is cured! What did I do? Upgraded to 4.3.4 and hey presto my button works EVERY time!

My issue is also resolved. Went down to a local indy iPhone repair shop and had the button replaced for $40.

Been working like a charm ever since.

@simplyshervin , could you please tell us were you got this information from? I couldn't find anything online, and was wondering how this isn't documented somewhere.

I have had this problem for a few months now. It comes and goes. A few days ago it started again, and the method discribed by @simplyshervin did work for me! (pressing and holding the home button while the shutdown slider is visible)  I don't know if it's a coincidence, or if it is a real fix because I wasn't able to test it long enough, but I also have the feeling that my home button is more responsive than it was before. But this could be my imagination.

For those saying that an iOS update solves the problem: I have had every iOS version since my problem appeared (must have been 4.3.4 or something) and am using the 3rd beta of iOS 5.0... and the problem is not fixed.

For those saying that it is a hardware problem: this may well be, but it is not only a hardware problem! To many people are reporting this problem after an iOS upgrade. And I have noticed the link between my home button not working, and many applications running far too often to believe this could just be a hardware problem.

Well.. that being said: I will report back in a few weeks to say if the home button calibration did actually solve the problem.

I googled the problem and someone had listed those instructions. I don't recall the site. But I have 2 iPhone 4 that had this problem, one with updated software and one without. Both are working normally after I followed those instructions.

If it works, then your phone needed calibrating. If it doesn't then something else is causing the problem.

The only thing I found about calibrating (when googling) was to hold the power and home buttons together. But this isn't calibrating. This method simply forces your iphone to turn off without the proper shutdown processes that occur when you just press the power button until the "slider" appears to properly shutdown your iphone. Useful for when your iphone completely hangs on you.

I agree that this is not as simple as a hardware issue. I recall a version of iOS 4 that actually fixed the issue but for some reason, as soon as I upgraded to the next release, the problem came back. This is clear evidence that there is a software issue that Apple themselves do not fully understand.

My phone never gets dropped or handled roughly. It has one of the best skin/shock covers available.

I am experimenting with task management in the iOS device now to see if memory management has something to do with this issue. So far, I am in my 3rd week of testing and it is showing promising results. Will report back in a few days.

    1) Plug the cable that came with the iPhone into a USB port on your computer

    2) Hold "Home" button till Voice Control show up

    3) Now press "Cancel" and your Home button should be reactivate.

I've had the same problem off and on through a couple of firmware updates. Recently I found a "fix" by accident. When my phone was not responding, I dropped it on a carpeted floor and it started working again. Worked fine until today when I mowed the yard with it in my pocket. So when I finished I went inside and dropped it from about waist high again, and it's working again. 2 for 2 so far...

I've tried all the other things in this post with mixed success.

    Apple, you should hire me

    Issues (intermittent)

    • You single or double-click and nothing happens
    • You double-click and it only registers a single click

    Solution 1

    • Connect with USB cable to charge your iPhone / iPad
    • Hold Home button till Voice Control show up
    • Now press Cancel and your Home button should be reactivate.

    Solution 2

    • Still not working? Well you might have other problem. Check and see is there a lots of dust in the connection slot and it does interfere with the Home Button. Take a toothpick or a dry toothbrush - clean it up.

    Solution 3

    • You need a complex gadget...vacuum cleaner. Try cleaning under the home button by sucking the dust out. You will be surprise how well it turn out
