Setting up two exchange accounts on the iPad - using Exchange 2003

I am trying to set up two exchange accounts on my iPad.
My account sets up fine, but when I try and set up another account (a generic one which is shared with two other people so we can all monitor incoming messages), my iPad says it can't set up two identical accounts. I need to use my username and password to access this generic account, but the email address is not the same. So on one I am using myname@mycompany.com, and the other is helpdesk@mycompany.com.

We are using Exchange 2003 (which might be the problem).

Any suggestions?

Hello,

You can have multiple Exchange accounts on an iPad so long as it is running iOS 4.0 or higher. However, Exchange 2003 and iPhone/iPad do not play well together in the sandbox. :-)

There are many posting here and elsewhere on the challenges folks have had with Exchange 2003 and iOS. The challenge tends to be around how information is exchanged (no pun intended) between the server and iOS. It does seem to work better if you can connect to the Exchange server via POP or IMAP as Darpacheif has suggested but most enterprises do not open up POP or IMAP. Check with your Exchange and/or Network Administrator to see if these are open in your environment. And drop a friendly reminder to upgrade to Exchange 2007. :-) It works much better with iOS.

About a week ago, someone asked the same question. You can have multiple Exchange accounts with iOS4, but must be to different servers. More specifically, different domains. I'm guessing that you can't have two connection sessions with different credentials. (Windows typically doesn't allow this.)

For the "shared" account, you could probably use some alternate method. If not IMAP, then send mail to a Sharepoint list, which would then be accessible in a web browser. The accounting department at my office has all mail going to an Exchange public folder. Everyone in the accounting department can view the messages and move/delete them as necessary. They're doing that in Outlook instead of an iPad. Since the iPad can't normally access public folders, you could access them via web browser (if enabled in Exchange) or find an app. There are a few iPhone apps but they look like they're not optimized for iPad.
