Intellimouse Button 4 and 5 unuseable in Apple?

So I have been trying to use Button 4 and 5 (side buttons) on my Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 to go back and forward in Firefox, but right now they function exactly the same as the middle mouse click, and it creates the scroller circle.

Is there any way to change this or am I out of luck?
