I just dropped my iPhone 4 on the floor of my bedroom (had it in bed, fell asleep, flew off when I was getting up from bed). It's a hardwood floor, and I don't notice any cracks or dents or dings on the iPhone's external frame. I also don't seem to have any problems with calls, audio (headphone or external), or the camera. However, when I shake the phone near my ear I hear a slight rattle. Can't tell where it's coming from exactly, although it seems like it's around the middle/top of the phone. Anybody else had similar incidents, and if so do you know what this is? Is this something that I should go to the Apple store to get fixed? So far no functional problems, but the sound is a bit annoying. Thanks.
That's interesting. Is this something I can fix, or have fixed for me at the Apple Store? i.e. is it something I can bolt back in, or have I basically ruined the solder holding the mechanism down?
If it is the autofocus mechanism, it's supposed to move and therefore, it may rattle. In any case, there's nothing the user can do about it. If it's working well, I wouldn't worry about it. FYI, the 1 year warranty does not include accidental damage.
Fair enough, thanks. I might take a look-see (borrowing a pentalobe screwdriver from a friend) if there's anything loose in there that I can fix (or if a small non-essential piece may have broken loose that I can remove) but otherwise I guess I'll live with it since it doesn't seem to have affected anything.
If you dismantle it, you absolutely will void your warranty... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Consider any rattle a battle scar. Gives your phone personality.
Could it be your power button?
I've never dropped my iPhone 4 but the power button rattles a bit, I know it's the power button because if I put my finger on it while shaking it the rattle goes away. I've checked this on other 4's in my office and they do the same thing.
