Time Machine hangs on login

Current setup:

Apple Macbook (unibody) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4GB DDR3
Mac OS X v 10.6.7

Issue:

Using Time Machine to connect to a WDC Mybook World Edition II (white light). No issues accessing the public file share through finder/bonjour.

Starting a little more than a week ago, Time Machine stopped being able to connect to the WD_Backup (the default Time Machine backup partition on this particular WDC MBWE). It kept timing out, and any attempt to go back and re-configure TM to access WD_Backup, ends up with a permanent "hang" when asked to enter the Username and Password for WD_Backup (swirling beach ball - going on 20 minutes now). I ultimately have to a force quit the process. It's worth noting that NO error shows up in the system logs.

I've reset the WD_Backup password to factory defaults, and still no luck.

I was told to try deleting the com.apple.timemachine.plist, also to no avail.

I've tried to SSH into the WDC, but can only access the public share, not the WD_Backup share. It asks for the password, and when I give it, it says it's incorrect (despite being able to use that same password to access the WD_Backup through their web interface).

I'm stuck. Any thoughts? Does any of this make any sense?

Thank you in advance for any/all your help.

Stu

If you reset it, and the factory default password doesn't work, that sounds like a WD problem.

But that's one of the difficulties when using a 3rd-party NAS; it's often very hard to tell where that sort of problem is.

That's what I thought too, but I can access the drive via any other method except Time Machine. I had read that Time Machine does not act kindly to any type of password change to the backup partition, so I went through the process of verifying passwords in the keychain, rebooting, etc. No such luck.

The weirdest part is that it was working fine, doing hourly backups, and then out of nowhere (or for some reason I'm missing), it just stopped.

<sigh>

It's some sort of problem connecting to your backups; possibly the backups are corrupted.

Can you see the sparse bundle on the NAS via the Finder? If so, try to repair it, using the instructions for a Time Capsule in #A5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

I should have mentioned that I tried that last night, but oddly enough, WD_Backup was not in the list of available drives in Disk Utility...

Is there anyway to SSH into that particular partition (WD_Backup) and delete the appleDB file? I can SSH into the primary partition, but whenever I try to get to WD_Backup, it simple hangs in the terminal window, then times out.

I've initiated the same thread over at WDC support, but they're scratching their heads as well.

No, the drive won't be in Disk Utility. It doesn't see network drives.

Can you see the sparse bundle +*via the Finder?+* If so, see #A5.

Yes, that's one of the problems using a 3rd-party NAS. 😟

I am gettin the same Error message. OSSTATUS ERROR 89.

Then, it indicates the disk needs repair. The only trouble is you can't find the data after that. I got one message saying my TM drive was reeporting as being "Network Drive". After no joy on disk repair and that info message saying the drive had no room left, I tried erasiing the drive with quick erase, then sdecure erase. The TM will not complete the erase. It bails saying there is a disk error needing repair.

HELP!

My TM is a 1st Gen 500Mb unit which was replaced under AppleCare in that failure problem a couple years ago.

I ended up speaking with Appletalk who suggested I go ahead and erase the drive for the fix. Per Apple, I ended up performing a couple of Zero Formats before the drive was readily found and communicating. 😠

Sadly though, the drive almost immediately started to report a failing drive after that. 😢 Although my TC was out of its AppleCare period, the TC was covered under the extended AppleCare of my MacBook Pro which was purchased less than a year after the TC itself. 😉

I have now suffered through the death of the power supply after having it 16 months (recall issue) and received a warranted replacement. Then, the hard drive failed (after nearly 18 months) and I recived a warranted replacement. I now have until April 2012 left in my extended AppleCare and one more year of AppleCare on the TC itself. 😎

Thank you Apple for such comprehensive and wide ranging service from AppleCare! 😍
