iPad Mute button not working (sort of)

Anyone else experience this? The side Mute button mutes applications just fine, but I just noticed a flaw. I was playing a video that I took with the iPad 2 and I had the Mute switch turned on. Unfortunately, I heard the sound from the video completely. What gives Apple?

Go to settings, general, side switch setting and see how it is set. Mute or rotation lock.

I just tested mine and the juice slide switch does not mute the sound but it shows the Mute symbol on the screen. If I press and hold the lower volume button, it goes to mute volume.
I was testing with YouTube.

It only mutes notifications e.g. so that you can watch videos or listen to music without hearing email notifications etc. From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

+Choosing Mute will disable audio alerts and notifications. It will not mute audio playback, such as music, podcasts, movies, and TV shows.+

That is the correct behaviour. The mute switch only mutes system sounds so that you don't get disturbed by notifications etc, when you are listening to music, watching a movie or doing a presentation.
If you want to mute all sounds, just hold the volume down button for a second.

This will mute notifications only, not YouTube videos or games sound. Any ideas on how to actually mute ALL SOUNDS on iPad?

Vladiator,

Great question! Use the mute switch to turn off system sounds, to mute music etc. as well, double tap the home button, swipe right and you should see a volume bar. Turn the volume bar all the way down to mute music and other playback. I don't have my iPad next to me to test but YouTube being an app may have its own volume setting. So check that before you start watching "Greatest fails of 2012" during a play!

I just tested it and it worked - even for YouTube videos and games. Excellent. Now my iPad will not turn on heads of everyone attending the meeting 😁
