That's suggestive of an issue with the quality of the blank DVD media rather than the drive. This is a good resource for info on "good v. bad" DVD media:

From reading the site, the issue seems to exist with all computer and drive makes. so it's not a Mac-specific or Matshita-specific problem.
what is a compatible burner to replace it in case i want to purchase a new one?
As your profile shows you have 8GB RAM, your MBP must be newer than the older models this forum covers. Suggest you ask that part of the question in the forum area for MBPs made since Late 2008:

Should someone here not notice the subtle mention of your RAM quantity in your profile, they could recommend a drive that is compatible with the older, silver-key MBPs that may not be usable in your newer model.
