Mac Crashes when Playing Games

The Mac described below sometimes completely freezes, requiring a restart (but not getting a grey screen) when playing CPU-intensive games. It starts to lag badly, then the screen gets messed up (windows leave trails), then eventually the entire computer freezes. The reason I say "games" is because this has never happened in Final Cut Express or anything, but this problem started recently (a month ago) after I upgraded to 10.5.8 so it might not be just for games.

It seems to crash rarely (once every one or two weeks) but in the past few days it has been worse (it crashed three times today). My guess is that it's an OS issue, so I put it under the Leopard forum. I know that this can be complicated to fix, but does anyone know if this is a known issue?

P.S. The apps it has crashed so far on: Age of Empires II, Phun, Super TuxKart, Minecraft, X-Plane

iMac6,1 (Late 2006 iMac Intel), 3 GB RAM, 2.33 GHz Processor, 2 TB internal HD, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Minor GUI mods, external and internal iSight cameras :D

Several things you might look at to hone in on software vs a hardware issue.

When it starts to lag badly and misbehave, have you looked at the Activity Monitor to see if anything else is running that is significantly using the CPU?

Have you looked at the temperatures to see if they are elevated? To check temperatures, you can use http://islayer.net/apps/istatpro/

Have you run the Apple hardware test to see if it points out any hardware issues?
