Protect & clean leather cover

I purchased the red leather smart cover with my iPad 2. Within the first day I somehow got two dark marks on the case, probably from greasy food. So far my attempts to clean it have only made it worse.

Is there a recommended way for cleaning the leather cover, and would it benefit from a leather protector spray like you would put on shoes?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Use a high quality leather cleaner on a soft cloth. I use Lexol. Don't rub hard. Gentle circles or with the grain in the leather if you can see it. The dye in the leather will bleed off on the cloth a little so don't be surprised. It states that on the Apple store page selling the Smart Covers and bore itself out when I cleaned mine. Looks great though.

*"Lexol cannot be held responsible for any damages as all instructions are suggestions. It is recommended that you test a small, inconspicuous area first"*

LEXOL LEATHER CLEANER
Instructions
Directions:
Clean one manageable section of the interior at a time. For example, with bucket seats, clean the seat back, and then move on to the seat cushion, and so forth.
Test small inconspicuous area first.
Apply a small amount of cleaner to a clean, wet Lexol applicator sponge or cloth.
Rub gently into leather to work up lather.
Use a clean damp cloth or sponge to wipe away foam and dirt. Towel dry.
Follow with Lexol Leather Conditioner.

Not recommended for suede, extremely soft leather or other non-leather surfaces.

Clay, my gut tells me they'll say no, but best case scenario, they do exchange it for you. Is isn't going to hurt to give it a shot, and for $70 I'd try. I'd go in and simply say that you wiped it down to clean it and it just started bleeding horribly. I don't know that I'd elaborate on the cleaner, etc. Let us know how it goes.

The other thing that people here forget is that dyeing is not uniform across every batch. Just a fact working with something like leather. There is a reason that Rolls Royce, Ferrari, and Bentley all use a single meticulously inspected piece to trim out one car at a time instead of pre-cuts laying on a shelf. It is so that anywhere in the car there is leather, it all looks the same. Not saying that the Smart Cover should be to that extreme. Just pointing out that in a high production product like the Smart Covers, Clays cover may not have been treated properly, cured correctly, etc... I used Lexol cleaner and conditioner on my black smart cover and it did nothing like Clays. It happens.

I asked someone at my local Apple store about this. This person had worked in the fashion industry, and they stated that with this type of leather, you should just use it a lot. She showed me one of the covers there that had been used and handled a great deal, and had aged into this vintage leather look. It actually looked good. So maybe the answer is just to let it age....She did not think you needed to use anything on it...
