Mac Pro Only Boots in Safe Mode - GeForce 7300 issue?

I'm having major issues with my MacPro. Last week I was working when the screen froze. I had to force restart with the power button. Since then it has only booted in Safe Mode.

I've tried booting from MacOS 10.6.3 CD and latest Diskwarrior CD and it get part way through startup then hangs on blank screens. Oddly the cursor works okay at that point.

I suspect the problem might be a bad NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card. I've seen that issue in a couple other posts

Any help greatly appreciated!

Why are you using CD and DVD when you could easily and should have another emergency boot drive plus some clone backups of your system, so you can run your Disk Warrior (4.3) and other programs off a 'live' hard drive and other programs.

If you suspect the 7300, maybe it is time to replace that too.

Finally, caught a break. I am booted and updated with my Lion and account. Including the malware removal tool Apple released just recently.

My only gripe now is a buzzing noise that comes on fromtime to time. I removed the panel and made sure the screws were tightened. I pushed on the plastic bracket that slides into the slot towards the front side. That stopped the rattling, but as soon as I removed my finger it would return. I reseated the card and placed the panel back and the rattling is gone.

I was prompted this morning to install Java from Software update. Seems all is going well and I get my Mac Pro for at least a few more years. I hope.

Hey what's up everyone! I'm new to these forums, so I just want

To say hey and introduce myself.

I have a Mac pro 1.1, bought in late 2007. It was purchased with

An nvidia 7300 gt video card. Recently my MP would not boot normally

And I can't even get it to boot from the DVD (optical drive). It would just

Hang on the apple splash screen, turn blue, then a white screen. With two

Mouse pointers (one arrow, and one spinning color wheel). Then it justs hangs

And the color wheel keeps spinning. Even if i leave it alone for a while

(to give it a chance for it, to do its thing) it still hangs. I have been reading

Around these discussions and have concluded that it may be my video card going

Bad.

I have read that the 5770 works well in a MP 1.1. My question is about upgrading my

Graphics card. I was thinking the 5770 would be the optimal choice. But however, I was

Wondering which one is best. I am not usually a Mac user and I know little when it comes

To video cards. I saw on amazon that there are two 5770 cards. One is the official apple brand,

(with two dvi connectors) for $260, and the other one has two dvi, one hdmi, and one other port

(I am not Familiar with) for around $130.

Which one will work with my MP 1.1? Will both of them work?

I would like a video card with an HDMI port, so I can use my LED screen with sound.

Your help is appreciated and thanks in advance for your replies and info!

On a side note: I already did all the procedures to troubleshoot my problem.

It is running with original apple keyboard, mouse, ram, video card, and one HD.

Problem: won't boot from HDD, ORIGINAL GRAY INSTALLATION DISC, & SNOWLEOPARD DVD.

Gray screen error, After apple splash screen.

Hangs With two mouse pointers (one arrow & color spinning wheel)

Only boots in safe mode

Your Mac Pro's symtoms are the exact as mine. If you look at the early part of this post of mine you will see a pic of an odd square object around my mouse. Like you I couldn't get it to boot even from the disk or jump drive. Only safe mode worked for a few times long enough to back up important files.

I went with the 5770 Apple driver supported card and boom. It booted up normally and with a much higher resolution I noticed right way. It was easy to install and my Lion recognized it just fine. Easy to install even as long as it is compared to the original video card.

Only the price was the biggest hinderance. Highly recommended.

Ok thanks..Grant & robert for the quick replies.

I will purchase the 5770 with the apple firmware,

And I will let you know if my problem persists after swapping

Out my 7300 for the 5770.

I am at my Wits end, and I got To the point of almost buying

a new Mac because of this. Hopefully I can revive my MP and

be able to use it for another 5 years! Thanks again for the help.

I have no doubt your problem is the same as mine. The 7300 are failing on this Mac Pro 1.1 after 6 years. There's YouTube video on how to install. Good time to clean out the dust in there while your removing the old one and just before you install the new one. As is in any case make sure you have a back up or make a back up of your data. Good luck.

I feel for you. My friend has a Map Pro 1.1 and had the same failure as we did. She had a higher end graphics card, but the same failure.

I glad I found the link to solve my problem......but it led me back here on the Apple community which I couldn't find in the first place. Go figure.

Anyways, I am back up and getting plenty of use with my 5 year Mac Pro 1.1. Wish I could upgrade it to Mountain Lion. Oh well save my pennies.

PROBLEM: MAC PRO WON'T BOOT UP NORMALLY, ONLY BOOTS IN SAFE MODE

AFTER APPLE SPLASH SCREEN, IT HANGS & SHOWS TWO POINTERS

(SPINNING COLOR WHEEL, MOUSE POINTER)

SOLVED: CHANGED VIDEOCARD WITH APPLE FIRMWARE

(ATI RADEON GEFORCE 5770)

Hey just wanted to post up the recent results of my solved issue.

The 5770 video card was installed and the Mac instantly

Booted up with no problems. I just hope after booting and

Rebooting my mac constantly, it didn't cause some problems

To the motherboard, power supply, etc. (internals) due to

always shutting it down by means of Hard off-ing

(holding the power button down, till it shus off).

Thanks to the original Poster (Robert) for his quick

replies and for sharing his Situation on solving the issue.

I will be forever grateful and your help was greatly

Appreciated. Now I too, am wondering if it is possible

To run mountain lion on such an old Mac. Lol!

Hi guys,

I think I might have the same problem, but don't understand half of the stuff being discussed here, so bare with me if you can:

I was watching a youtube video when the computer froze. Booted it up again and firefox restored the same tabs and it froze again, so I thought it had something to do with the youtube video. Next time I booted up, I made sure I wasn't going near firefox, but I noticed little grey - ish blue lines going accross the screen (not moving lines), also the background graphics are a little different, lower solution, or something like that.I did the permissions repair and disc repair, ran OnyX. At the earlier stage I was able to boot from the original installer disc, but now it will crash when I try. I booted with hardware test and it tells me everything is normal. Power on self test tells me this:

Result: Failed

Failure Type: Memory

Memory Slot: DIMM 2/DIMM Riser A

I unplugged everything, let it cool down, opened it up, cleaned the dust out, took both risers out and cleaned dust, put them back in and still get the same message. At this point, it will only boot up in safe mode and I don't know what else to do. I saw the thread, but since I don't even know what the Gforce 7300 does, I am a bit reluctant to buy a new card for that price, to find it's not the problem. I have a Mac Pro 1.1, running 10.6.8.

Could the ram be the problem?

Mar 12, 2013 11:41 AM in response to Matty2deep

Matty2deep-

Your problem is unrelated to the issues discussed in the rest of this thread. You have encountered a memory failure, and unlike in older Macs, once these fail they need to be replaced with a new one -- it is not just an issue of corrosion.

Result: Failed

Failure Type: Memory

Memory Slot: DIMM 2/DIMM Riser A

If you take off the side door while your Mac is running, you may see a red light next to the failed DIMM (memory module) on Riser A (usually the top Rider card). It needs to be replaced with a good one.

If you can change it yourself, good ones come from this source, among others:

Mar 12, 2013 11:54 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Hi Grant, Thank you so much for your reply!

Should I move this over to another thread?

So the whole boot up and freezing problem could be caused by the faulty memory? Is there a way to take it out completely and see if it boots up normally?

I don't know if this is of any help, but maybe it tells you something:
