Mac Pro Only Boots in Safe Mode - GeForce 7300 issue?

I'm having major issues with my MacPro. Last week I was working when the screen froze. I had to force restart with the power button. Since then it has only booted in Safe Mode.

I've tried booting from MacOS 10.6.3 CD and latest Diskwarrior CD and it get part way through startup then hangs on blank screens. Oddly the cursor works okay at that point.

I suspect the problem might be a bad NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card. I've seen that issue in a couple other posts

Any help greatly appreciated!

Why are you using CD and DVD when you could easily and should have another emergency boot drive plus some clone backups of your system, so you can run your Disk Warrior (4.3) and other programs off a 'live' hard drive and other programs.

If you suspect the 7300, maybe it is time to replace that too.

Quick update:

I ordered Lion with Apple (download), and ordered an additional 4GB of ram (which would bring me up to 8GB of new ram) and the ATI 5770 from Amazon (2 day shipping).

I will keep my fingers crossed, install it all and let y'all know if this fixed my problem.

I absolutley appreciate all the time and information all of you shared and am really grateful for this.

Sorry for not being as computer savy as most of you and thanks for baring with me during this time of frustration!

Best regards,

Matt

Don't install Lion "over" Snow Leopard.

Use Setup Assistant.

Keep 10.6.8 as is for first month or so and you cna dual boot. You can also run SL under Lion as a VM - especially if you:

Have 8-core 5300's - can upgrade the 1,1

Have the system on a SSD and VM even on SSD helps.

Keep system and data on separate drives.

The Lion download installer will "self destruct" and remove itself on the first restart.

SAVE IT somewhere instead. You can create a Lion Install flash drive (8GB is needed).

Hi guys!!!

I just got the card (ati 5770), installed it and "BAMMMM"...I am back in business! Thank you guys!. How do I mark with "this solved my problem"? Just write in a reply?

Now before I move on: when I restarted the computer, the Expansion slot utility window opened up and told mne that my card is running below max speed. Do I have to worry about it, do anything. If it's a matter allocating more whatever, how do I this? The other 4 profiles I am offered all use more than one graphics card, as far as I can tell, and I am only using one (in slot 2)

The Mac Pro 1,1 only has one place for a double wide 16x graphic card: slot #1.

To "solve" you would have had to:

start your own thread

have someone "move" your section of the thread to a new thread.

which is why try to avoid the "me too" or "thread hijack" of the Original Poster (seen on forums as the "OP")

Lion and our PCIe slots, there is a program - may not work right? in /Library/CoreServices? and you can tell the utility to ignore or make the changes. Move the card. Does not hurt and might also want to do what is an SMC RESET when changing hardware in any manner.

https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367

Symptoms

If your Macintosh computer won't turn on, here's how to troubleshoot it. Please keep in mind that although your computer may display similar symptoms that prevent it from showing video, this article discusses what to do if the computer won't turn on, meaning that when you press the power button:

  • You don't hear a startup chime.
  • You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
  • The power button or power indicator doesn't light up at all.
If your computer doesn't display any video, it may display one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
  • You may hear a startup chime.
  • You may hear fan or drive noise.
  • You may see the power button or power indicator light up.
If any of these conditions occurs, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead.

Resolution

If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:

  1. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)
  2. Make sure that the power adapter is properly connected to the power port on the side or back of the computer.
  3. Disconnect all accessories that are plugged into the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
  4. Reset the computer's PMU, SMC, or PRAM. Refer to the instructions for your model:

Everything but the motherboard can be upgraded.

Easy: disk drives of all sizes, SSD, etc

RAM $120 for 16GB, $300+ for more than that.

Video graphic card as you just did

PCIe controllers to add USB3 and SATA 6G are popular

processor: the upgrade from 2.66 (2x2-core) to a 2 x 4-core 53xx is more common and darn cheap today and can double the cpu processing power if needed.

Having a good UPS 1500VA can help protect and lessen or extend the life of the computer and PSU, I feel. A must too for protecting modems and routers.

Paid $1000 for 23" display, today you can put in larger displays, for less, just not the newest Apple display that uses its new (proprietary) Thunderbolt interface.
