The link you gave is for updating a 1G ipod. However, it is likely that the OP has a 1G. He can check which model he has by going here:
If the OP has 2G then he should be able to update to 4.2.1 at no cost. He needs to ensure that he has the latest iTunes which is 10.x
When I try to update my system through iTunes, it says that the software is up to date.
If his iTunes is telling him his iOS is up to date then he probably has the 1st generation iPod Touch.
He would then need to purchase the 3.1 update as planb77 links to.
To the original poster. Look on the back of your iPod Touch for one of these numbers and let us know what you have.
