Deciphering the Console messages.

Hey guys.... been having serious issues with my 2006 MBP C2D 2.16 3GB RAM 10.6.7 It takes a really, really long time to boot. It boots to OS but all I see for several minutes - or longer - is a blue screen. Eventually the desktop just pops up. I've done the usual things like resetting PRAM, SMC, reinstall - no apps or mods... same thing. Sometimes it does want to get past the gray screen. Sometimes it refuses to boot to OS DVD. I've run MEMTEST - OK... I've done a Verify Disk - OK (old drive). I installed a new drive and have the same problems. While stuck, it gets hot... anyway, I've copied Console messages from today and wonder if anyone can say what it all means.

I'll paste them below --- thanks!

2006 MBP 2.16Mhz 15" 3GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.7), iP4

Hi Bill,

This started before you did a reinstall?

Have you run Apple Hardware Test?

Memtest won't catch all RAM issues, so RAM is still a suspect. Try troubleshooting the RAM. Shut down. Disconnect power adapter and remove battery. If the RAM you have installed is not the RAM provided by Apple, remove that RAM and install the Apple-supplied RAM. If you don't have the Apple-supplied RAM, or you already have the Apple-supplied RAM installed, remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.

If neither RAM module works in either slot, then there are almost certainly other hardware issues (usually the logic board, which covers a plethora of possibilities; unfortunately, the fix for almost any LB issue is to replace the entire LB), as the odds of both RAM modules and/or both slots being faulty are extremely low (but possible).

Another, or next, option is to schedule an appointment with the "genius" bar. They run different tests than AHT and may be able to identify the issue.

Hi, thanks for the reply. No, I have not run the AHT. Is that pressing the "D" key while booting to OS DVD? (I'll do a search in a moment).

This started months ago. It's the reason I opened the machine and installed a new HDD. And to clean the fans and heat sinks. Same symptoms before and after.

3 years ago, I replaced one of two original RAM modules with a 2GB Samsung from Crucial. Same specs. I'll swap it back, and I'll also try booting with 1 module at a time.

But last night I accidentally discovered something new : I was holding the laptop while it was booting, and got stuck on the blue screen. I gave the laptop a little shake, just a single motion nothing bad... and all of a sudden my desktop popped up. Meaning, the OS was fully booted, but I had a blue screen for some reason that could be fixed by physically by jiggling something inside.

Remember, I had this blue-screen before the reinstall of HDD and OS, etc... I was very careful to put the cables back snuggly. I used ifixit.com instructions and have built many desktops over the years.

I'll need to first make sure the RAM is tight. If I still have the problem I'll open it up and make sure the discreet graphics is seated tight. That is - if it's a removable card - need to look into that.

Bill:

I have been searching everywhere for the recurring
Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint

Lots of people seem to be getting it using different apps, but not much helpful information. The best I got was Ian Williams4's post in this thread:
I'm seeing this issue on a Mid 2010 13" MBP running 10.6.4.

I removed the /Library/Caches and /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folders in single user mode and the machine booted successfully and in under 1 minute.

I'll be running a looping restart on the machine to verify that the issue is resolved, but it looks like something either gets damaged or otherwise messed up in the /Library/Caches folder. I removed the SystemConfiguration folder mostly out of habit.

May be worth a shot.

In some cases, the battery can interfere with a cable between it and the inside of the MBP, causing keyboard and/or trackpad issues. Shut down the MBP, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery, take a piece of something semi-soft (like a paper napkin folded over a couple times), place it over the cable you see in the battery compartment, and tape it down. Replace the battery and see how things go. If this works, you'll eventually want to replace the keyboard/trackpad cable (about $25 if you can do the work yourself). Note that if you go to a repair shop, they usually want to replace the entire top case assembly, which is much more costly.

If the issue persists, shut down, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery, connect the power adapter, boot the MBP and see if the issue persists without the battery in place (but remember to save a lot, because if the power adapter gets pulled out the MBP will immediately shut down and any unsaved work will be lost).

Also look at the battery to see if it has any signs of deformity/bulging, in which case do not use it again (it may be pushing on the keyboard/trackpad cable and causing the issue); it must be replaced.

If I still have the problem I'll open it up and make sure the discreet graphics is seated tight. That is - if it's a removable card - need to look into that.

No, it's soldered on.

I'd try the cable in the batt compartment before anything.

Hey, guys.... thanks for the help, appreciate it! Been super busy, but I'm on it again. Right now I got the original discs that came with computer and am using it to run AHT. I chose "extended testing" so it's gonna take awhile.

As soon as I can I will look at the battery issue and the <</Library/Caches and /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folders>> issue. Fun! : )

I'm exhausted today... I'll be back tomorrow. thanks again... keep ya posted, always something new to learn.
