IPHONE 4 iOS 4.2.1 Official Unlock In India ??

My friend from Us gifted me an Iphone 4 with iOS 4.2.1 , ut i am not able to use my sim card on it. I am in india. trying to useBharti airtel Sim card.
Is there an official Unlock or Factory unlock thing in india? Where should i go for this in mumbai and what are the charges for official unlock?

If the iPhone came from the USA it is almost definitely locked to AT&T (all USA iPhones are locked regardless of being under contract or purchased contract free)
They do not unlock for any one or any reason
Send it back it is useless unless you use it as an iPod or consult google

As it was mentioned, there is no official unlock for the iphone in U.S, it is carrier locked to AT&T and they don't offer unlocking at all for the iphone. Other countries does not unlock foreign iphones either (only through hacking).

Now if the phone was bought less than a month, I'd send it back to your friend from U.S and have him return the phone.
