How to downgrade 4.2.1 to 3.1.3

I have iOS 4.2.1 installed on my iPhone 3G. I am not very happy with the performance, so I would like to downgrade to 3.1.3. Can anyone help me here about how can I do so?

Also, I don't have any backups from 3.1, so will I be able to retain the data that I currently have in my phone??

Please help...

There is no official way to downgrade iPhone software thus such is not supported by Apple and cannot be discussed here per the terms of use of this forum. You'll have to use Google for instructions if you want to go this route.
