"Add Bookmark" Not Working

I just noticed that my Safari 5.0.4 is not saving bookmarks when I use the "Add Bookmark..." command. Any suggestions on how to fix? I have tried resetting Safari but problem persists. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions folder. If you have any installed, turn that off, try adding a Bookmark. If it's not Extensions...

Quit Safari.

Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.

Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. Try adding a Bookmark. If you can, move that .plist file to the Trash.

Thanks for the tips. Trashing the prefs file seemed to work - until I discovered what may be the root cause. I just noticed that I have three complete sets of my bookmarks in my "Add Bookmarks..." menu drop down list.

I recall when syncing my new iPhone that I was getting a system message that indicated that more than 25% of my bookmarks had changed. I use MobileMe for synchronization and somehow in this process I now have multiple redundant bookmark lists.

I think what was happening was I was selecting the bookmark folder to add a bookmark to and it was a folder not associated with Safari - it was probably associated with either my iPad or iPhone - consequently it wasn't being saved on the Mac.

What's the remedy? Do I have to manually redefine each bookmark and delete the redundant ones? The redundant bookmark copies do not appear to show up in the manage bookmarks screen - they only show up under the "Add Bookmark..."

I'm probably not being clear here, but looks like I have a mess on my hands. I recall getting a similar sync warning message associated with my Calendar events - but I don't see a redundant list of calendars there.

I have done a bit more digging and noticed I do have duplicate bookmarks within the "show all bookmarks" screen of Safari. Looks like the following:

COLLECTIONS

Bookmarks Bar
Bookmarks Menu

BOOKMARKS

BookmarksBar
BookmarksMenu

Contents of those folders (actual bookmarks) are identical between the top and bottom. Which should be deleted?
