Wouldn't the Airport router support Bonjour? I'm no expert but Apple builds that support into the computers would it not be in the router as well?

    Oke here's a work around.

Take your PC and search for "airprint activator" it's freeware that makes the wireless printer "visible" for the Ipad.

Try and let us know, works fine here!

If you have the HP Officejet 6500A, it should work.  Apple's AirPort routers work well.  I have been able to print using one of the old White "Flying Saucer" AirPorts, as well as an Apple Time Capsule router.

If your HP 6500 is not the "A" version, it does not have AirPrint capability.  If that is the case, then alternate methods are needed.  As others mentioned, examples are Print n Share on the iPad, or AirPrint sharing using either a "hack" or a program like Printopia on your desktop computer.

Type your printer into google along with "print" "iPad" and see if there is an app. Brother has a free app that works great. You need to change settings to A4 and instead of using the app to print you go to the item you want to print and the option to print from said app is given. Voila!

Thanks DanK 1956 - worked like a charm, but here's a caveat for others trying this:  If you leave the WiFi turned on on the iPad2 and connected to the printer's ad-hoc network, with no other WiFi network available, Safari will not be able to access the Internet, even if you have a 3G iPad2 (AT&T or Verizon).  You have to switch off the WiFi in the Settings to re-enable 3G Internet access.  Not a big deal.  Just turn WiFi on when you want to print, and turn it off when you're done.

Be sure none of your equipment is connected to a neighbor's WiFi that happens to have the same name as yours.  That happened to me a few months ago.  Also, the printer must connect to the network via Wifi or Ethernet, NOT USB.

I think the most likely problem may be that your WiFi router does not correctly handle Bonjour data required by AirPrint.  You may need to contact the router's manufacturer to see if there is a change to its setup or a firmware update that will correct the problem.
