Do I need HDTV to watch Netflix Instant movies with Apple TV?

I just have a Sony flat screen TV and don't think it is HDTV capable. Then, I can't watch Netflix instant movie on my TV with Apple TV?
I'm just watching Netflix instant viewing movies on my MacBook Pro and watch DVD on TV. If I buy Apple TV for viewing Netflix instant movie on TV, do I need to buy HDTV? What would be your recommendations?

You need a TV with HDMI and the ability to receive 720p signals to use the Apple Tv at all. If your TV works with the Apple TV, netflix, iTunes and everything will work. So the main question is whether your Tv meets the Apple TV requirements.

Yes & NO.

NetFlix streams both HD and Standard TV, however AppleTV 2 I think only has HDMI for video output, so you need a TV that has HDMI input. I dont think there are any standard TV's with HDMI inputs.
