Embedding Fonts in PDFs

I have a Microsoft Word document (don't start. I know...) and I'm using the Apple print dialog to save as a PDF. This works fine so long as I read the same PDF on my Mac. The document contains Myriad Pro (TrueType) and Callibri fonts. Perhaps not commonly available on Windows.

Anyhow, when I send the PDF to a Windows user, they get an error that the fonts are not embedded and the document fails to render.

Is there any workaround other than buying Adobe Acrobat Pro?

Thanks

The default of OS X's "Save as PDF" is to embed fonts. It should work. That said, 10.6.7 is having problems with OpenType PostScript fonts, of which Myriad Pro is one. I do see you marked it TrueType, but unless you converted it, I'm pretty sure Myriad only comes from Adobe as a PS font.

Preview can display PDF files created out of OS X, 10.6.7 fine. But like those you send the PDF files to, if you were to install the Acrobat Reader for Mac, you would likely find you can't view it, either.

If you can, the only known fix at this time is to revert to 10.6.6.

That is a bit of an exaggeration. Just run FontBook, show Font Info, and go through and disable any Postscript OpenType font. It should take about 2-3 minutes. When Apple releases a fix, you can re-enable them.

It is the only true fix if you want, or need to use OpenType PostScript fonts. It won't help the user here to disable a font used in the document.

So, to be clear, if I simply omit OpenType from my documents, I'm good to go?

As etresoft said, omitting OpenType PostScript fonts from your workflow is all you need to do. OpenType TrueType fonts work. Which with only a few exceptions, are the kind of OpenType fonts supplied with OS X.

However, if you must use OT PS fonts, then you have various choices that don't force you to revert to 10.6.6 (it's just easier since you then don't have to pay attention).

1) Printing out of any of the Adobe CS apps to Acrobat Pro produces working documents with any type of font.

2) Quark 8.x has its own PDF generator. These also work.

3) Any other app, such as Word, cannot print to the Distiller. I forgot to test it, but I think you can use "Save as PostScript" under the PDF drop down menu, and then drop the .ps file into the Distiller to create a working PDF.
